I picked up a Camillus advertising knife at an estate sale today. It has a lone single spear blade also following at the back of the blade is a cap lifter. On the opposite side of the handle is a folding corkscrew. The tang is stamped Camillus Cut. Co., Camillus N.Y., USA. Did Camillus use that particular tang stamp during a particular time frame? The handles appear to be made of artificial pearl. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Dale

It is an older one. One of the more knowledgeable Camillus guys will chime in directly.

Can you post a picture of the knife?

Take care,
Willie

Owd Wullie, Thanks for the response. I'm suspecting the knife is an older model also. I'm only basing that on the structure of the lettering on the tang stamp. I could be out in left field though with that guess. I wish I could say I'll post a picture but haven't been very successful at doing so. I'll try once again but no guarantees. Thanks, Dale

Dale,

"Goins' Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings" shows that tang stamp used from 1919 until 1941 on all blades of the knife. From 1941 thru 1946 that stamping appeared on only one (main) blade. Since your knife is a single blade that makes it a bit tricky to pin down if it is from the earlier or later period. (I doubt the corkscrew would be marked either way)

You abreviated the word Cutlery as "Cut." in your description of the tang stamp. Am I correct in assuming the word Cutlery is actually spelled out completely?

Phil

Philco, Thank you much for the input! Due to the location of the cap lifter on the back of the blade, Cutlery is abreviated due to space on the tang. I realize pinning it down is difficult, but giving it a time frame gives the knife some more signifigance. Thank you again, Dale
