Post by Timstools »

Here is a Aurum kitchen knife set engraved in 1975 not long after Aurum Opened before they moved from Richardson to Garland Texas.
It just arrived today, there were a couple more I could not fit in the picture. I dont think ill be using these. Ive been told there was a set for sale in Japan for $5000 dollars.

Hi Timstools,
Those are some great looking knives. ::tu::
I don't know much at all about Aurum. Can you share some basic information about who they are and what they do?
Thanks,

Phil

Yes, sure, Aurum Etchings were a company that engraved knives and guns from 1974 to 1991 and have only just re-opened but as a smaller business.
They were at their peak in the 70s. Samuel R Shortes was the founder and President and Revolutionised a process of engraving with acid. The black parts were removed by acid and then covered with black crome.
The majority of their money was made doing firearms. Samuel Shortes used fly to the White House and give examples of his work to Ronald Reagon. There are others who now try and copy this sort of process but Aurum were the first and greatest, it is still quite easy to tell there work apart as it was better, they used skilled artists and had high quality control. Samuel Shortes himself did this set back in 1975. Here is a Link with some more info. Click

Thank you for the information and the link. I find that the more I learn, the more I realize how little I know. I also realize that the more I learn about something, the more fully I can apprectiate it. That process is a very interesting blend of art and technology.

Yes your right youve hit the nail on the head, it is a combination of Art and Technology combined in a unique way, that is the strong appeal for me. Sam has become a good friend. Here are some photos of him I have at home.
I like your Jesus text above Phil.
