Paul, if you don't zoom out you can focus much closer to the camera and the macro function works better. I've been 8 feet away from the knife and zoomed out to full magnification and getting the same shot as when the camera was only 8 inches away and just barely zoomed out. A tripod is a must either way for shake free pics and also as a third hand sometimes.

I use an Olympus M-500. ::tu::
I take all my pics on manual mode so I can control lighting and focus. I went to some classes and I could use some more, I really learned my camera by going to a few classes though. My camera can take better pics than I let it, it's been a lot of fun though. 8)
