Queen Cutlery #98 1972-1976 "Skinner" Model Hunting Knife - Imitation Winterbottom Bone
Made in America!
A Brief Queen Cutlery History:
As with all American blade manufacturers, Queen Cutlery has had an extensive and complicated history. The short story is that a handful of Schatt and Morgan employees left S&M and began making knives on their own in Titusville, PA circa 1918. They were very successful and produced knives in their original factory for nearly 100 years, using traditional methods and equipment. During that time, they acquired numerous companies and trademarks, including Robeson and, their former employer, Schatt and Morgan in 1933. Queen was bought by Servotronics in 1969 and then sold to the Daniels Family in 2012. Daniels Family Cutlery kept things running until 2018, when Queen shut it's doors for good.
Queen first introduced this knife in 1951, marketed as the "Skinner" model. This familiar shape is ideal for hunters, offering lots of surface area on the cutting edge as well allowing the user to focus more force onto a single point. The raised spine offers a place to use your index finger to guide the blade. Although, I would probably keep this out of the field and in the safe. She's just too pretty.
This beauty measures in at 7 3/4" with an upswept, 4" stainless steel clip blade
She has full tang construction with a brushed aluminum guard and "mushroom" style pommel cap
Flawless Immitation Winterbottom Bone scales with brass pins
Sheath not included
This knife is in excellent condition. There are some minor blemishes on the pommel as well as some rub marks water spots on the blade, mostly on the pile side (see pics). The most wear I notice is on the blade side (top) of the guard (also in pics) with some dings and scratches. The blade appears to maintain it's factory edge, or lack thereof. I have read about some Queen knives being shipped without much of an edge on it, and this seems to be one of those. Not only does it look like it has never been used, carried or sharpened; but it may have never even had a real edge put on it from the factory! The "Queen Steel #98" over "Made in USA" blade etch still pops. I did notice some interesting striations underneath the etch which I believe came from the factory, due to how straight they are and their uniform spacing. The Immitation Winterbottom Bone scales are free from any chips or cracks. The whole knife is completely solid. No wobble or play to be found.
Queen has always been held in high regard with collectors, noted for their high quality and tradition. Following the closure of their doors in 2018, there has been a renewed interest in collecting all lines of Queen Cutlery; including Robeson, and Schatt and Morgan. Grab your piece of American knife history before they're all gone!
**Note: I am new to knife collecting and selling. All descriptions are to the best of my knowledge and in an attempt to be as honest and forthright as possible in regards to knife condition. I have conducted hours upon hours of research on each individual knife that comes into my possession in an attempt to set a fair price.
