Limited Run - Cold Steel Carbon V Kobun - Tanto Boot Knife - 2000-2003
Made in America!
This knife is no ordinary boot knife. While the traditional Kobun (first introduced in 1996) is already a terrific tool, this limited run, from 2000-2003, has some serious upgrades. Let's start with the steel. Most of the Kobuns that you will see are made with AUS 8A, and a smaller amount are made with 420 Stainless. But there are a small number of them that have been blessed with the Carbon V steel. Here is what Cold Steel has to say about it's Carbon V line:
"Some of our Cold Steel knives are made from Carbon V, a high carbon, low alloy cutlery grade steel. This steel is superior in performance to most other steels due to its chemistry and also because of the close controls that we maintain at every stage of the manufacturing process. These controls begin at the steel mill where Cold Steel specifies the desired microstructure of the steel. Once smelted, each steel shipment is microscopically checked for structural quality, cleanliness and chemical content by an independent metallurgist not in the mills employ. The blades are then blanked parallel to the rolling direction of the steel plate to optimize grain flow along the length of the blade. The final step is a precise heat treatment sequence that was developed by Cold Steel specifically for this custom steel. This heat treatment process is one of our most highly guarded trade secrets. It was arrived at over several years by using an exhaustive series of practical and metallurgical tests and observations."
As if that wasn't enough, this Kobun also has the upgraded black epoxy powder coating on top of it. This coating is so robust, it actually brings the factory weight up from 4.4 oz to 4.5 oz This thing was built to take a beating. It's a tad bigger than most boot knives I've handled, which is comforting in its self defense role. But it is still small enough to conceal, sitting just around 10" OAL. Its 5.5" tanto style blade tucks neatly into its Kydex style "Concealex" IWB/OWB sheath. The textured rubber grip ensures safe and secure handling, complete with a lanyard hole. The guard adds another layer of safe handling, without disrupting the low profile. Factory edge! Never used, carried or sharpened.
I'm not usually a fan of modern knives, but I seriously considered adding this to my SHTF chest rig. I just didn't have the room for a second knife and don't have the heart to replace my Kabar. Good news for you; It's now on the market.
**Note: I am new to knife collecting and selling. All descriptions are to the best of my knowledge and in an attempt to be as honest and forthright as possible in regards to knife condition. I have conducted hours upon hours of research on each individual knife that comes into my possession in an attempt to set a fair price. PLEASE feel free to contact me for more information on this or any other item in my store.
