I don’t know whether to call this a serpentine pen knife or a wharncliffe pen knife I think it more closely resembles a wharncliffe or at least a hybrid of the two. This is an extremely nice Vintage or Antique EMPIRE WINSTED, CT 2-Blade Serpentine Pen Pocket Knife. It has an unused and unsharpened carbon steel narrow spear point main blade with a common nail pull. Never used but both faces have a significant amount of very light micro-pitting which give the blade its cloudy look Etched on the front face is EMPIRE, and then a Crown and the Brand. Stamped on the front tang is EMPIRE (over) WINSTED (over) CT. On the other end of the frame is an unused and unsharpened carbon steel pen secondary blade with a common nail pull. Both faces have some scattered staining and clusters of micro-pitting. Stamped on the front tang is EMPIRE (over) WINSTED (over) CT. Both blades still have excellent open and close snap. The knife has a beautiful set of genuine Mother-of-Pearl scales. They’re in excellent plus condition and free of any cracks, splits or missing chips. There are three nickel silver handle pins in each scale. The liners are brightly polished brass. The knife has a single steel back spring and it’s free of any breaks or cracks and it continues to perform the functions it was designed to perform. This great old Antique or Vintage Empire Knife Co. Serpentine or Wharncliffe Pen Folding Pocket is 2 13/16” in length. One of the finest early old knife makers in the United States. Made between c.1856-1930 at Empire’s factory located in Winsted, Connecticut. Additional photos or information on request.
