Re: Ornithology (Bird) Thread
Nice shot of a great egret, April 15, 2020 - upstate central NY. Not a frequent visitor around here. Got to watch him catch things for a half hour, hunts with neck fully extended, maybe 8 - 10 inches above the water.

Re: WTB / WTT for a Japanese sword
Sounds like you made a good choice, - if you're searching the web for a 'using' sword, look for the term - 'battle ready' - there are also 'stage swords' - that shouldn't be used for any cutting. Stainless swords are strictly 'wall hangers' - they are very susceptible to to breaking during use, whic...

Re: WTB / WTT for a Japanese sword
There are 'junk' military Japanese swords - worth next to nothing, while a good quality modern Japanese katana will cost you several thousand dollars. If an antique, by a noted maker, and regarded highly, price may begin at 10's of thousands of dollars, and upwards. You really need to be more specif...

No idea on the maker here. Mother-of-Toilet seat scales. Three sets of numbers, maybe patent numbers? - stamped on the tang. Trick knife. Any guesses as to maker? Value? It was a garage sale find.

Re: Anyone Collect Axes & Hatchets?
Brand new acquisition, Fox Trekking Axe. Made in Maniago, Italy. - Definitely NOT a wood splitting tool, but seems it would excel at chopping, carving, de-barking, food-prep, (choke up and use it like an ulu,) woodcraft, - and in a pinch, it would be quite capable of skinning large game, It comes as...

Holster making tip?
If you are trying to duplicate another holster - precise measurements of the holster can be taken by using blue painters masking tape, wrapped around the holster you are trying to duplicate. I've done a few of them, for some friends, and it makes the duplication project really easy. But most of you ...

Flintknapped knife needed a sheath...
New to my 'accumulations' - this knife, found at flintknappers.com - needed a sheath. Here's what I came up with. Full pouch, with a flap - the little oblong closure button is an antler point, whittled down a little, with a little light brown dye, for that 'antique' look. Didn't have one of these be...

Nice write up on the folder kits. Gives me encouragement to try one - my technical skills are - measure with a micrometer, - mark with chalk - cut with an axe.

Here's a pouch type sheath, made for an older 'KINFOLKS'. I have a few of these - lacking sheaths. Time to get some thinner leather and try to repro the older, original sheaths.

Just finished this one the other day - friend had a Buck knife that came with a woven, cloth type sheath, (maybe gortex - I don't know), anyways he hate those sheaths, wanted some decent leather for it. Here's what I came up with.

Here's a sheath I made for a William Rod DSC02645.JPG DSC02644.JPG gers - Sheffield 'I Cut My Way' knife that was given to me by a friend - 'no sheath included' - he figured I needed a knife that had 'my name' - stamped on it. -- I had made several sheaths for him previously. - This knife has a litt...

Re: Period correct replacement sheaths
The period replacement sheaths are great! - Comes under the topic -"Why didn't I think of that?" - Did you use thinner leather? - which was typical back then - or a heavier leather? - I like to use 8 - 9 oz. for new sheaths - but these oldies used considerably thinner stuff. I have several...

Help identify maker - 'RN' ?
Lost some records in the great computer crash of 2017 - don't laugh. Bought a couple of these, several years ago - If I recall the maker was from Arkansas - I could be wrong. I know he did run a catfish farm - and told me how to prep catfish for some really sweet eating. The blade marks on his knive...

If the fraudulent goods were sold for LESS THAN $ 50.00 -- the post office WILL NOT pursue that as mail fraud. Notice how a lot of crap gets sold for around $ 49.99 ?

Re: Can Anyone ID this Scrimshaw Artist (Scrimshander?)
Anyone can try their hand at scrimshaw. This isn't a particularly high-end example, but it is very nice in it's own right. I did a few pieces once, just to try my hand at it, sorry, no pictures remain of my work. One was a three-masted clipper ship, about the size of a silver dollar, done on a stag ...

Re: Barber Shop - Reverse Clock
Old fashioned barber shops - brings back a memory of an old Italian barber I went in the late 1950's - early '60's. If you were sitting in his chair, at exactly 12:00 noon, he would stop cutting your hair, sit down and have his lunch. This took exactly 1/2 hour. A sandwich of some type of salami, a ...

Ten thumbs up for Muskrat Man. A while back he refurbished a Case Classic 71098 that I wrote here about, celluloid, that was virtually destroyed by outgassing. Put some new maroon micarta scales on it for me, cleaned, adjusted, full blade polish - ( had deeply pitted rust from outgassing). When it c...

Price engraved on shield of old Hammer Brand?
Single blade Hammer Brand, 197 tang stamp. 4 3/8" closed, 3 3/8" blade. Shield is engraved, in a calligraphy style scroll engraving "May 25, 1929" - On the little lobe on the shield, at the extreme right, a price is engraved, (at least what I take to be the price) it is - 1.00 - ...
