Thanks. It definitely won't stop me from carrying it, especially now that I know how easy it is to clean up again!

I love that amber bone too, Steve, and yes - it feels great in the hand!Steve Warden wrote: ↑Tue Apr 28, 2020 12:16 am Glad you were able to get it cleaned up.
Love that amber bone!
I have a couple Queens with that, so I can tell by yours how really beautiful that must be in the hand!!

Queen 64 Canoe Bolster Corrosion
I began carrying this Queen #64 Canoe as an EDC, and the bolsters quickly corroded. Looks like copper oxidation to me - green in color. I have quite a few other #64s in my collection and none of them have done this, although they haven't been riding around in my pocket, either. Any suggestions on ho...

Re: GEC Re-Sale Prices
EO knives are all bringing premiums, whether GEC or Schatt and Morgan. I have been buying them up whenever I see one that isn’t too ridiculously high and in some cases reselling them. I don’t understand this fully, except when you get one and see how easy it is to open, it has great appeal. I guess...

Re: Japaneese Water Stone
Daryl, Good Japanese water stones work great but they are costly and they tend to wear down quickly . They need to be maintained. I have used them in the past but not anymore. Too much trouble. Oscar I think I've learned my lesson. I'm back to good old, affordable Arkansas stones, along with my Lan...

Re: Japaneese Water Stone
Daryl. You’re very welcome. I believe I’d call it quits and use whatever method works for you. The money you save not buying more stones can be spent on knives. A quick update: The problem was the "cheap" $60 stone set. I just unearthed my old Arkansas tri-hone and, using the exact same t...

Re: Queen / Schatt & Morgan Scout Knife
I am a little surprised at how inaccessible and hard to open some of the blades are. Even if I had thumbnails of iron, which I do not, I doubt I could use this as an EDC. I had to pry the blades open with the bottle opener of a Victorinox SAK, and it was hard to get to the inner ones. My other Queen...

Re: Queen / Schatt & Morgan Scout Knife
I used to have one in Smooth Brown Bone that I picked up from SMKW while visiting the area. My memory of the knife is vague but I seem to remember that mine had "1 of 100" etched on the blade implying that it was an SFO. I don't remember if mine had a bail or not. It was a good knife. Hea...

Queen / Schatt & Morgan Scout Knife
I just won a very pretty Schatt & Morgan #0642SK Scout/camp knife on the Bay. I've been collecting both Scout knives and Queen knives for a while, and this is the first time I've seen this one. Even Scoutknives.net doesn't have a listing for it, and they have darned near everything. I'll post a ...

Re: Japaneese Water Stone
Thank you Oscar. How do you create your convex edge? I'm hoping Oscar will answer your question about how he does it. In the meantime, the two main ways I know of to do it are with a low-speed belt sharpener, like the WorkSharp, or by stropping with a flexible strop. The curvature of the belt or st...

Re: Japaneese Water Stone
I used my usual approach of getting a 15 degree/side back-bevel, and then doing the final sharpening at 20 degrees/side. Daryl, may I ask what is the advantage of changing to 20 degrees for final sharpening. That's a good question, and I'm sure this will be more than a little controversial. Maybe i...

Re: Japaneese Water Stone
I believe I’d call it quits and use whatever method works for you. The money you save not buying more stones can be spent on knives. A good point. I just tuned up four of my knives in 15 minutes with my usual method, and that included cleaning the ceramic rods. Maybe if I get a ton of Amazon reward...

Re: Japaneese Water Stone
cudgee: Thank you for pointing me to the Idahone site. I like what I see there. I mostly sharpen pocket knives and kitchen knives. I use a GATCO or Lansky clamp/rod sharpener for the really tough cases (if the blades are big enough), and angled ceramic rods for easier knives and for general maintena...

Re: Japaneese Water Stone
Hey Daryl, Have you tried using ceramic rods to finish the edge? They don’t really sharpen, they remove any burrs and straighten the edge. I use Lansky crock sticks as final finish. The angle is set, so you just run edge vertical to the rods a few times. Also, I use them often to touch up a good ed...

Re: Japaneese Water Stone
Daryl: Thanks for the link to those angle guides. They look like they will do a good job. I will order some so I can use my waterstones again. I only sharpen knives I use as working tools. Collector knives I leave alone. I do think most people are challenged when it comes to freehand sharpening on ...

Re: Japaneese Water Stone
I’ve used water stones before and they can in fact create a fantastic edge. My problem though, being sharpening challenged, is maintaining perfect angles. It would be terrific if someone made an angle guide to use with them. As for them being soft, yes you can scar them with a sharp knife. They hav...

Re: 15? 20? 25?
I like 15 degrees per side (30 degrees inclusive) for my kitchen knives, and 20 degrees/side on my pocket knives. (On the 20-degree knives, I prefer to back-bevel at 15 degrees/side first.)
