Re: Parker & Field (Prussia) Serpentine Whittler
Conclusions??? Limited samples, and expertise, make it tough to conclude. I tried to be impartial. But I first thought it was Stag - now I am not so sure. The interior microscope scan says Stag. Penetration resistance says Stag. Visible "canals" say Stag. Maintaining a good impression of t...

Re: Parker & Field (Prussia) Serpentine Whittler
What's Cookin"? So, I simmered 4 samples for just over one hour; raw bone, pressed sample, Stag and black horn. The Stag and pressed samples resisted squeezing the least, the bone more, and surprisingly the black horn the most - very tough!! I held each piece tightly for approx. 1 1/2 minutes i...

Re: Parker & Field (Prussia) Serpentine Whittler
Finally, I splintered up some pieces of each material, ( and snipped a hank of chest hair!! ), to do the burn and smell test. The bone and antler samples, as well as the pressed material, all smelled like the dentists office when he/she is drilling your teeth!! (two ugly images in one post!! ...

Re: Parker & Field (Prussia) Serpentine Whittler
So, I removed part of the sacrificial handle material from Lyle's knife and sanded the back down below the dye, then sanded the raw bone, and the back of the 3" piece of Sambar Stag all to 100 grit, to compare under the microscope, which is 40X, or 40 power. I found some "pits" diving...

Re: Parker & Field (Prussia) Serpentine Whittler
Finally found some time and materials to do this closer look at the "pressed" handle question!! Thanks for your patience my friends!!! :D Let me reiterate that I am an amateur at this, and all opinions and errors are strictly mine!! First of all I gathered some materials to look at; Thanks...

Re: Parker & Field (Prussia) Serpentine Whittler
So, my project to take a close look at pressed material is inching along! Here are some of the materials I have gathered to date; from the top: - Jigged bone slab from GEC. I am looking for an undyed piece. - Sambar stag slab, intended for a knife handle - Checkered horn handles, bug-eaten, removed ...

Re: Parker & Field (Prussia) Serpentine Whittler
I am slowly gathering my materials (and my courage)!! 8) Lyle has graciously sent me his "relic-ey" example knife to dissect and burn, and I have found a couple of pieces of stag and bone. I had some scraps of horn around - they are eluding me now, but I will likely find some. Ain't we got...

Re: Parker & Field (Prussia) Serpentine Whittler
When you magnify Horn, you see what looks like a bundle of hair, closely pressed. Animals that have Horns, have a tapered bony core inside the horn which projects from the skull, and provides support and nutrition to the horn. The usable parts of Stag are much more homogenous than Horn, with large a...

Re: Parker & Field (Prussia) Serpentine Whittler
It is nice to see this topic come up again! Thanks Lyle for the heads up. I have read this thread through with great delight, and tried to absorb what has been proposed, and hope I can add a little information. I also have some pictures to add, of a Clover Brand by W.H.Morely & Sons of Germany. ...

Re: Schrade Cut. Co. Too Good To Be True?
I hate to cite someone else's knives as reference, but Charlie Campagna has posted numerous scans here and on BF, of Schrade Cut. Co. knives that have glazed finishes on the front of the blades. That memory is what prompted the post. I've always had the impression that Charlie collected knives in a...

Re: Schrade Cut. Co. Too Good To Be True?
The final decision will have to be with the knife in hand, but I lean toward a correct knife. I have seen all-glaze finish Schrade Cuts, but the big majority would have a Crocus finish on that main blade on that pattern. The tangs look like they are from a knife that was stored in ideal conditions. ...

Thanks Joe, Lee and Dimitri!
Many of us have gotten nice old knives from Mike (galvanic) and that S & A is one of them!
I am curious as to who else collects those S & As?

Re: Sperry & Alexander
Nice examples of Sperry & Alexander knives, Joe and Dimitri!!
Allow me to add one to the thread; this one may not be as early as your two examples, and I think it is a Schrade Cut Co contract knife. 3 1/2" long both blades are marked S.&A.CO. (over) NEW YORK.

I have not been following the recent GEC knife runs and was just looking at Gunstock Jacks and see a "GEC 152118 TIDIOUTE W/ BAIL & CHAIN - ANTIQUE YELLOW" for $98 and it is available. Next to it is: "GEC 151118 B&C TIDIOUTE W/ BAIL & CHAIN - SFO BY CHARLIE CAMPAGNA"...

Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone!!
My sweet Missus took me out to a play about Woodie Guthrie, then to my favorite Italian restaurant!!
No knives for my birthday - somehow my family thinks I might have enough of them!!
I can't imagine why???
God Bless you all!!

The joints are often oiled, and it holds an edge FOREVER for some reason. I think the heat-treat hit the sweet spot! :) ::tu:: Amazing, considering you’re still cutting the mustard!!! I’ve never considered carrying a one blade knife. I used to keep one blade for just opening cans before I retired ....

Re: Only One Knife
ONE KNIFE???
Impossible!!
Well . . . . .maybe. . . . .
I am up for the challenge of surviving in the city with this one.
But if we are going post-apocalyptic, then it would have to be a #23 sized knife at least!!
