Re: Experiments in Patinas....
The experiments are great but with no labels on the photos or interpretations of the results I'm lost. How long was the blade exposed? Was the blade cleaned between exposures or am I seeing cumulative effects? What worked best in your opinion? What hardly worked at all? Was anything too aggressive a...

Re: Molds: Another Kind of Knife Collectible
Dang, Gene... is there any knife or knife-related item you don't own? There can't be many. Last time I saw you I said I wanted to visit and see your collection (i.e., Museum) someday, and your post just reinforces that notion.I have that very mold.

Molds: Another Kind of Knife Collectible
Here is a pocket knife chocolate mold made by Eppelsheimer & Co. Eppelsheimer was founded in 1880 in New York City. It continued until The American Chocolate Mould Co., formed in 1916 in New York City, took it over in 1947. There are thousands of different patterns for chocolate and ice cream mo...

Wade, there are a lot of resources available to give you ideas on ways to expand your work with your son. Here is just one about someone seeking advice about woodworking with a 14 year old with Cerebral Palsy: https://sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?293726-Woodworking-for-a-14-year-old-with-Cerebral...

It's a variation of the Jerusalem Cross, which is a Christian symbol that dates back about 1,000 years. See "Jerusalem Cross" in Wikipedia. The form has also been adopted as a variation on the traditional Celtic Cross (see photo below).

The photos I've seen of the Northfield factory show a large three story building. Any idea what this building is? Part of the same complex? Administrative offices?

BryanJ, I have no idea if your Universal is German, LF&C, or some other maker, but for what it is worth I did find the following information on the website for Bernal Cutlery: “In 1909 LF&C purchased the trademark Universal from Levi Snow of New Haven Ct. and Universal branded knives were ma...

Hi Scott. I enjoy checking out your eclectic collection of stuff every week, though it’s been quite a while since I’ve found something I couldn’t resist. I couldn’t help but smile when I saw again this week that $50 Entlemann’s cookie you’ve been trying to unload for ages. I guess the right Entleman...

Trade Sign for Boker Collectors
I spotted this Boker carved knife trade sign up for auction in PA. 26 inches long. $200 starting bid. Do you think it is factory made or a one-off made to display in a cutlery store? Listed as mid-20th century; I wonder if that is accurate? https://www.auctionzip.com/auction-lot/lot_66D46A88A5 Dennis

Possible Knife Storage Chest
I spotted this chest on Facebook. It’s advertised as a case for fly fishermen but would make a nice storage option for a smaller knife collection. I inquired and is 13 x 23 x 12. Located in Hazelton, PA. Asking $125 but listed as negotiable. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/2324812501062426...

I’m pretty sure those are scalpel handles for replaceable blades. Google “Swann Morton Scalpel Handle No 3” and you wii see one quite similar to the top one in your photo.

Looks like the Scout / hiker is carrying a spear (not a hiking staff) in his left hand. Another oddball detail.

I have a 3 piece boxed Anton Wingen set around here some place . . . What do you mean “… around here someplace” red? :) How could you lose track of such a beautiful set? Hey Scott there is a ton of history embodied in one if your knives this week: that unremarkable little German souvenir knife marked “Ricordo di Padova” (meaning Memory of Padua or Souvenir of Padua). That’s Saint Anthony, one of the most prominent Catholic saints, and his 12th century basilica shown...

Millsy, the crown means the knife was assayed for silver purity in Sheffield. The lion passant means it is sterling silver. The lower case “g” of that design means it was assayed in 1924, and thus likely made in ‘23 or ‘24. The T.M is the maker’s mark for Thomas Marples, a Sheffield silversmith. Goo...

Ray is right, a steal compared to the typical eBay asking prices. And don’t let a little cover damage deter you, as this book is used so frequently that everyone’s copy looks pretty ragged after a while.

This auction in North Carolina has a number of old oak cases that originally held lead type for printing presses, such as the particularly nice example shown below. https://bid.highbidswin.com/ui/auctions/108164 .
