Re: Carved out my first spoon

I’ve always just left the fully carved spoon in a cupboard for a week. In my part of the country, it’s generally low humidity. Maybe the wood chips is needed in high humidity areas? As for the new hook knife you got for Christmas, you may find that you need to modify the top of the grind a bit. Roun...

Re: Carved out my first spoon

Okay. I know this is an older thread, but last time I was on AAPK (Almost 10 yrs ago) this sub-forum did not exist. Here are a few of mine. All carved from green paper birch or Rowan (mtn ash). For the bowl I use a modified mora hook knife and a modified Haida style hook knife, and a Scandinavia gri...

Re: Hello from Alberta - it's been a long time

Tom. In my opinion, the best way to learn how to do "Vine Filework" is to experiment. Find yourself some thin bar stock, or old junker knife springs and see what happens. I would suggest that you Google Vine Filework Knife and you will see lots of videos and images showing different method...

Hello from Alberta - it's been a long time

Folks, Some of you know me, some do not. I was just poking around some old posts last night trying to find some photos of my old work and it seems it was 7 years or so since I last posted! Yikes - my how time flies! Orvet and I were chatting and he suggested I drop a note of greeting - so here you a...

Re: My first conversion ( another TL-29 )

Not been around much lately, but I sure like that renovation! The rear bolsters really pop....and I just love the TL-29 retrofits. That blade shape just fits my eye well I guess. To try something different, I added a cutout on the handle to make it into an eze-opener style on several that I've done....

Re: How do you fix a bent blade?

The most surefire way I've ever used to fix bent blades, was to very carefully tap it on the side of my stiddy to straighten it out....then just give it one more firm tap to be sure it was straight, have it break, and make a new one. lol...seriously though, I've only had marginal luck straightening ...

sure you do.....and it might be how your Grandpa used to touch up the edge befor. Use the bottom of a ceramic coffee mug to touch it up....followed by the top of your car window edge as a strop. Should provide a bit of an edge. Cheers, D thanks guys i think i can make out the statue of liberty on it...

Re: Pin Spinner

Not been around much, but this post caught my attention. I wonder what level of success you will have using the dremel as a drill press? I know that when I have spun pins, I have used A LOT of pressure from my 8" delta drill press.....not sure the dremel can handle it? Let us know how it goes, D

Re: Fixed blade handle material removal?

To be clear (and to answer your question), you can't remove the handles without "ruining the hardware".. since these are rivets, with a mechanical connection (ie. press fit) you will need to cut them to remove them.

Re: TL-29 redo

Glenn - if it makes you feel any better, I did a rehandle, blade replacement job on a folder. Was so intent on getting the pivot pin to expand to fill the hole in the bolster that I really, really went after it with my hammer.......only thing was, I forgot to use a slakener. I don't think th...

http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/knife_forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=6844 all you want to know about pin spinners and more. I've made a few for myself....the best ones for 3/32" pins are made out of hex drive bolts, as they already have a nice cup in the bottom. The set screws work great fo...

Re: TL-29 redo

Glenn, nothing wrong with that work for a good old fashioned "user". If I might offer a suggestion? When you peen that pivot pin, really get after it! expand the head to fill the hole by letting it really have it with the hammer. Just be sure to use a spacer so that the blade will open aft...

What every man should know about pocket knives

I know I haven't been around much, but I found this and it was a nice change from the usual, "ban them all" drivel we usually read about.

Re: Custom LB7

That looks nice and clean. A while back (like a year or more?) MM posted photos of his LB7's that had the bolsters thinned and reprofiled. The result is a very lean knife. One my dislikes of the LB7 (and I carried one for years) was the heft.....I have often thought about trying to make a nice light...

Dale, I agree that a new blade is best, but if that's not available (and I don't know how rare it is) then there might be other ways to tune the knife.

Regardless, it's going to have to be taken apart at least partway to get a fix.

Hope it works out for you.

Re: Restomod of a Boker Electrician's Knife

Looks good! I had a lot of success on my first few mods, when I took the time to write down on a piece of paper, ALL the steps I was going to take in repairing the knife. Then, I reviewed (or marked it as I went along) that sheet when I was done to see if I missed anything, got it in the wrong order...

Re: Case Stockman Broken Pin

What Dale said. However, you might be able to flex the scales apart (note I said "flex", not bend-----take an aspirin, not the whole bottle) and wiggle in a narrow exacto blade. Then you might be able to work the pin out with the exacto blade.....kind of like breaking into your sister's ro...

Re: any chance of finding a main clip blade for a XX 6318 stockm

I'm surprised that it's not repairable as is......you should be able to tweak the main spring a bit to tighten it up....you might also be able to pound the side of the spring a bit to expand it for more "bite" on the tang of the main blade. (I've had limited success with this method, but i...
