Re: Schrade 834B Smooth Black - not in catalogs?

My sense is that the NY USA tang stamp was only used for a few years, say up until about 1976. No proof of that, just what I have noticed.

I happen to have the same knife, actually the Schrade branded version, a 295K. Yours has plenty life left.

I can't see Schrade covering up the bottom of the tang stamp on the master, either. I think the clip main was from a square bolstered knife.

I've had all three of the bone stockmen, red, brown and green bone, plus one in black sawcut Delrin. I agree, the bone is some of the best both for color and jigging.

This melon tester from the 1960s has JOHNNY PEAK engraved on the celluloid handle. I'm afraid I know nothing about the company/name.

For John, I have a #147WE Wonda Edge which dates from 1959-'63. I've seen very few of any pattern, must not have been very popular.

Re: Uncle Henry 885 UH question

Your tang stamp is the first one following the Schrade Walden stamp, and with the low serial number I would be confident that it is from 1973. Unfortunately, they made so many of them that even in like new condition it is probably only worth about $45. Add $5 if it has the original box.

It depends on the tang stamp. What is the stamp on the clip main?

Left over Walden coined liners on your 285, Mike. A very early non-Walden.

Re: What is Your Latest Old Schrade?

SW Cut stands for Schrade Walden Cutlery. It's a newer knife (1980s most likely) which is made to be an homage to the older Schrade Walden and Keen Kutter knives of the 1960s and earlier.

Re: Uncle Henry 885 UH question

I do have data to support my assertion. Here is a chart with known serial numbers and their accompanying knife characteristics. Note that Walden #90354 had to have been made before NY USA #45224. Then note that the Schrade+ knives started with a #7887 which had to have been made after the NY USA #J2...

Re: Uncle Henry 885 UH question

From my research on the 885UH stockman I determined that Schrade started the serial numbers over whenever they made a tang stamp change. From Schrade Walden, to Schrade NY USA, to Schrade USA, to Schrade+ USA. So, we need to know the tang stamps of the knife in question to be able to properly date i...

In my experience, pick bone is usually bone and not some synthetic. The non-original sheath must add a great deal to the value of this package! ::barf::

Re: Schrade "Plus" stainless blades

The Schrade Walden stamp ended in 1973, while the Schrade + stamp did not start for at least a few more years. Best guess for the Schrade + stamp, at least on Uncle Henrys, is 1977-'79.

Re: Schrade "Plus" stainless blades

It definitely occurred after 1973. Here is the stamp of my 885UH, which from the serial number A6280 was made in either 1974 or '75.
885UH_1974stamp.jpg
Uncle Henrys always had stainless steel. Sometime between 1975 and 1980 seems likely for the "+" stamping.
