Re: Outbuilding Internet Connection

Ken - nearly all the point-to-point systems will say they need line-of-sight. Most use microwaves and all microwave communications are far too short a wavelength to handle obstructions. If your obstruction is trees, it all depends on how thick the foliage is - it might work in the Winter and suck in...

Re: Kitchen Knife Fight

I love that guy's channel - I watch his videos all the time.

I suspect the winners have more to do with the thickness of the edge than the hardness or toughness of the steel. I'll bet they are all within a couple points of each other in HRC.

Re: THE OFFICIAL AAPK WEATHER THREAD - HOWS YOUR WEATHER TODAY ?

We currently have a break in the storms - it has been pretty wild here, and it ain't over yet! We have actually been quite fortunate, we have only gotten 4 inches of rain in the last couple of days. Some of the neighboring communities have gotten as much as 15 inches of rain!! Our beach is really to...

I just found this very cool video showing several Lionel commercials from 1961. I remember seeing the engineering sets in the Lionel catalogs, but never had any of them. I suspect those sets might now be fairly rare.

Re: Kitchen Knives & Work Sharp Precision Adjust?

If she is chipping blades I would watch what she is doing. Kitchen counter and hitting a stainless-steel sink rim? Hitting bones or wrong type of cutting boards? That's a good question - I suspect it is primarily just being careless with the tools - dropping them in the sink, shoving them in drawer...

Re: Kitchen Knives & Work Sharp Precision Adjust?

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Part of my interest in the Precision Adjust system is for all my pocket knives, where I know it will work really well to quickly put on a really good, consistent edge. That consistency is why I'm shying away from just using a stone. I can put an edge on a knife with...

Kitchen Knives & Work Sharp Precision Adjust?

I've been thinking about getting a Work Sharp Precision Adjust sharpening system, and I know it will work well on all my pocket knives. Does anyone have experience using it on larger kitchen knives like an 8" or 10" Chef's knife? Can you get from heel to tip, or if not in one go, can you r...

Re: Have case knifes went to the dogs?

I'll give an unpopular opinion: isolation is not the right answer. We live in a world economy. That's not going to change. History has shown again & again that the most powerful force for peace is TRADE. When we have healthy trade with other countries, we have incentives to work together to succ...

Re: Arrgh! I left alkaline batteries in my camera flash & they leaked...

I disassembled much more of the flash (why not, I can't break it any more than it already is!), and the corrosion is a bit worse than I initially thought. There are some tiny ribbon connectors between the battery pack and the power supply circuit board that have the green death, and I can see green ...

Re: Arrgh! I left alkaline batteries in my camera flash & they leaked...

Just out of curiosity, what brand were the batteries? The worst of all time for doing this to me are Duracell. Now when I buy something that comes new in the box with Duracell batteries, I throw them away unused. Yes, they were Duracell, although in my experience most alkaline batteries will do it ...

Arrgh! I left alkaline batteries in my camera flash & they leaked...

I'm an idiot. One of my prized possessions is a Canon 550EX flash for my Canon DSLR camera. I haven't needed to use the flash in quite a long time, and apparently I left the batteries in it the last time I used it. I know better, I really do... So, OF COURSE the batteries leaked and corroded the bat...

I just got this 1917-39 Robeson 642214 Camp Knife. It is is in pretty rough shape, but the blades still snap and I don't get a chance to acquire an old Robeson very often.

I snagged this Queen 26A Stockman. If I'm reading the tang stamp chart correctly, this is 1984-1990, is that correct? It is in great shape, EXCEPT for center pin cracks on both sides. I also got a nifty Queen box that is stamped 26A, so I think it is original to this knife. 20221030_154011.jpg 20221...

Re: Any Train Enthusiasts Out There?

Yep, that's a NYC 2056, the one in the video is an ATSF 2055. I use multiple conventional transformers, a Type R and an RW (both 110 Watts) with a little newer 50 Watt powering the trolley. I also have a couple KW's in storage and I think they're 90 Watts. I need to do some accessory rewiring to cl...

Re: The Electric Car Conundrum

The real issue is energy storage and transport. That's the problem with solar & wind. You can create a boatload of power, but only when & where the sun is shining or the wind is blowing. If that's not when & where you NEED the power, then you have to store it and transport it - and that'...

Well, that's not quite as bad as the guy that tried to drive an alternator off the wheels of an electric car to "charge" the batteries while he is driving. He thought that if he geared it to turn the alternator at a higher RPM than the wheels, that he would get "free energy" from...

Re: Help indentify tuxedo knife

My first thought was that the last line might be "Gatwick", but I don't think there's enough room for 4 more letters (especially a W). Then I thought maybe GATCO, but that doesn't really make sense as GATCO (the sharpeners) is not that old, and I don't think they ever made knives. It's har...
