Re: Founder of Gerber Knives, Pete Gerber, passed away
Thanks Pete.
For all you did for the industry, and for making my outdoor endeavors that much more enjoyable and productive.
You were truly a pioneer that brought a new level of excellence to his industry, and changed it for the better.
Hopefully forever.

Re: Balance Kitchen Knives.
I'm pretty sure they're 440c Steel, like the Sportsman series was back in the day. I have a couple of Balance+ and a couple of the classic Walnut series which are near identical other than the handles/scales. They take and hold an edge very well, and are so thin the edge comes up fast. My Classic Wa...

Re: Stamp on Gerber Brass Bolsters
It's probably some company's corporate logo from back in the day.
Lots of Gerber knives were commissioned by companies to be given out as awards, (like safety awards or for meeting sales goals etc) or for thank you gifts to good customers.
I see them on ebay all the time.

Re: Why are these so valuable?
Thanks Kris. Somewhere i have one of those steels as well. I did not know that Gerber knife steel needed a special steel or stone. Wonder if it was mostly marketing ? kj It was more than just marketing. The original Gerber line was made of HS Tool Steel recycled from industrial power hacksaw blades...

Re: Why are these so valuable?
Here is a pic of the Sportsman Steels, they are Chromium carbide bonded to O1 steel, made hard to sharpen the M2 HSS Gerber used. GerberSS.jpg Thank you. That's the one (one of them) I was talking about in the OP. So yes, they are indeed made of unobtanium! (sort of) And that explains why, despite ...

Why are these so valuable?
I see the old Gerber Sportsman's Steels regularly on auction sites for crazy prices. Like well over $100 is normal. Why? These: [image]https://proxy.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.antiquesnavigator.com%2Farchive%2F2011%2F09%2F16%2F270815919350.jpg&f=1[/image] Does anyone know why? Are th...

That good Sir, is a Gerber PK I "Skookum." Made circa 1975. Here's an ad for it: http://www.vintagepaperads.com/1975-Gerber-PK-I-Skookum-Folding-Knife-Ad_p_83711.html Great knives. Kind of like a stainless version of the Sportsman series. Sized between the Sportsman I and the Sportsman II,...

Re: Old Gerber identification help
Apparently only the Stag-handled versions are the S59 HST steel. The Macassar ebony handled ones are Gerber's 440c. Scanned from a catalog of that era: [image]http://theknifepoint.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/gerber-475s-knife.png[/image] ETA: It always kills me when I see the prices in those old cat...

Hi guys & gals, I'm new here, but I've been a fan of Gerber Legendary Blades since almost forever. I bought my first one in the early-mid '70s, a Sportsman II, and carried it until it was lost in the Williamson River doing battle with a large rainbow trout, sometime around 1994. (A long sad sto...
