Please look at Photo

Can you please look at the attached photo. I found this listed on EBAY and at first I thought, "what a great knife". Then I looked closely at this picture and to me it looks like the handle and finger guard has been coated with either polyurethane or shellac. Possibly to try and preserve a...

Re: Work Sharp Precision Adjust---Further Grit Options

Hi Workingedge, I purchased the extra slider with the lapping film. The original slider comes with 320, 600, and 3,000 grits. The extra films consist of 600, 1,200, 1,800, 8,000, 14,000, and 60,000 grits. Just curious which grits you recommend in succession. I know its obvious that you should start ...

Re: Darken the Birds head pommel

Yep, they also have a product called Brass Black. I think I'm going to restock on both. My own experience with the Aluminum Black is that you never know for sure what it will take to. Must have something to do with the alloy of the metal. On the pommel, I couldn't have asked for anything better. How...

Re: Darken the Birds head pommel

Wow... I just remembered I had an old bottle of Birchwood Casey's Aluminum Black. That did the trick. The pommel took the aluminum black extremely well in one application. The finger guard took two applications to get a complete coating. My knife is starting to get a aged look to it and I'm pleased....

Darken the Birds head pommel

Can anybody advise me how to darken the light metal birds head pommel on the end of the handle? I think the metal is some alloy of aluminum and other light metals. I'm trying to give it an aged look. I also have a finger guard that I'm trying to darken. It looks like brass but I think its just some ...

Re: Precision Adjust Knife Sharpener Review

When I checked the price on Amazon, I saw that they are currently out of stock. I'm not going to try and compare the functionality or ability to more expensive systems but, for the value of what you pay for it, it is hard to beat. It's kind of like a cheap pair of binoculars I take hunting with me. ...

I'm wondering if what I thought was mildew is actually white paint? Perhaps the tip got bent trying to pry off a paint lid?

Avoid the heat. Take it slow. Soft taps with hammer on anvil. That's the kind of information I'm looking for. Thanks.

Re: Bent Tip

Truthfully, I don't have the knife in my hands at this point. I think for some of this, you either need to see the knife in person or have a really good high definition camera. This may end up being nothing but a piece of junk. A paper weight per say but, I'd like to see what I'm able to do with it....

Bent Tip

What is the best thing to do for a bent tip on a knife blade? I have a Schade 498 that is in real rough shape. Lots of rust. Mildew on the leather handle. Try to bend it back to straight? Grind it off and form a new tip? Should heat be applied at any process and perhaps rehardened? Just looking to c...

Re: Sharpening advice for Schrade Uncle Henry 171 Pro Hunter

"Pro Hunter" so it is intended to be used to field dress ungulates (mainly deer, moose, elk). I prefer a thin edge that slices easily. I do not use my hunting knives to try to chop into bone or joints. It is not necessary. Some people prefer a thicker stronger edge so the edge is not dull...

Sharpening advice for Schrade Uncle Henry 171 Pro Hunter

I'm about ready to sharpen a Schrade Uncle Henry 171 Pro Hunter. Currently it is duller than a door nail after doing some refinishing work on the blade. I'm trying to figure out what kind of edge to put on it. I'm trying to figure out what the intended purpose of this knife is. It's a big heavy knif...

Rust Pits

Just curious. Has anybody ever had any success in trying to fill in rust pits on a blade? Be curious what kind of success or failure you may have had. Any success in getting the filler material to match the blade color?

remove dark spots on carbon steel blade.

Is there anyway to remove the dark spots on a carbon steel blade without removing the patina? So far I've used steel wool and WD40. I used Flitz. Even did a little polishing with the dremmel using the red stuff. I got an older blade in real good condition. No pitting and no scratches.

Re: Finding Suitable "Project Knives"

I'd like to know the answer to that to. I got a couple of knives from Ebay for fixing up, but truthfully, I paid too much. I get the impression that everything is a bit overpriced on Ebay. Maybe I'm out of touch but I saw a knife go for sale on Ebay for $170.00. Is this knife really worth this much?...

cleaning and re-sealing leather stack handle

I'm working on a leather stack handle from a Schrade 148 knife that I'm trying to clean up. I would say that the handle is in good condition other than I think it is just dirty. Probably years of deer guts and blood on it mixed with some hand sweat. Anyhow, I'm trying not to get too aggressive with ...

That's why I already have the Kroil on hand. :D

Re: Advice on a pair of project knives

I'll have to get some WD40. I see that recommended often. Anybody familiar with Kroil? I would think that might do just as well as the WD40.

By the way, there are two different knives pictured. One is a Schrade Uncle Henry 171 and the other is a Schrade 498 from their 49er series.

Advice on a pair of project knives

Hello Everyone, I purchased a pair of knives as a project to try and restore. I hope I wasn't foolish spending money on knives on such condition. Re: Knife Polishing Removing Rust Pitting How To

I have a large fixed blade that was given to me years ago that I had left in my truck and discovered that it began to rust. It was a mistake to do that. I know. No name or tang stamp on the knife so I have no idea who made it. I was going to use this to experiment on. I had in mind to sand this down...
