Re: 2023 POS Exchange

Got my stinking box from treefarmer, unfortunately I can't post a photo because my pc crashed, so I hope that tree farmer can post one. Thanks for the knives. I may try to convert a couple into carving knives. I love the congress by the way.

Wood carving help

I am wanting to try my hand at carving faces, I need advice as to how to begin, what wood to use, what kind of carving knife do I need, such as a detail knife? I have been whittling for several years and have whittled spoons, ball in a cage, wooden chain. I was gifted a pocket knife several years ag...

Re: Pens and Razors

A live edge bowl is one that has the bark left on the outside rim of the bowl. It is best achieved when the wood is cut during the winter months when the sap in the bottom of the tree. A natural edge bowl is one that the bark is missing on the top edge but the rough edge is left on it. Both make bea...

As most of you know by now, I have been making pens for several years now and have added other items to my inventory. I now have mach 3 razors made out of deer antler and for the ladies, some made out of acrylic. I also have letter openers, bottle stoppers, pens of course and a few key chains. I hav...

Been a while

Hello, it has been a while since I was on here last. Life has gotten in the way, my mom had a heart attack over a year ago, so my life and the lives of siblings had to take a step back and take care of her. She doing good now to be 82 years young. Re: Wood Lathe

Should make some nice pens. I am also waiting on warmer weather to get back in the shop. Need to make a bunch of pens and some bowls as well. When I make pens in bunches I always number my blanks so that I can line up the wood grain when I turn them. I will number as follows, L1-U1 and so on, this l...

Re: Wood Lathe

Great job on the mallet and nice score on the wood cutoffs. A tip on the handle of the mallet, if you want the handle to butt up against the head of the mallet, just make a small undercut on the shoulder of the handle. I had to figure it out when I made a couple of finials for some lids for some box...

Nice job on the project. I used to make cedar hope chest years ago and I loved to take raw wood and turn it into something nice and useful. Now I just do it with a wood lathe.

Re: Advice needed for woodworking project

Great advice on this project, only thing that I would add is to buy 9 ply plywood and not 7 ply, reason being is because 9 ply has less pocket holes in it. Also basswood is a great wood for face framing, easy to stain or paint.

Re: Wood Lathe

Nice job on the tool handle and I love the live edge bowls. The best wood for live edge bowls is green cut wood that is cut in the winter when the sap is down in the wood, makes the bark stick better on the edge. When I make my tool handles, I buy 1 inch copper pipe couplings and cut them in half, m...

Re: Wood Lathe

I also want to let you know that I have a carbide insert tool that I had a machine shop near me make to turn pens, the total shaft length is 6 inches with 2 inches being round to fit a handle. It is made from 1/2 inch square key stock. I have not had any issues with the softness of the key stock, an...
