I could see some, for lack of better words, gunk in the pivot area, so I used a butane lighter/torch to burn it out, then used some 3 in 1 oil on it. Works like a charm.

Ok I just got a gerber from target, pretty cheap type that you just push open the blade with a thumb-stub. (sorry about my lack of terminology). Anyways, its pretty tough to open the blade and i'd like to make it so a flick with your thumb could open it almost all the way, without any blade wobble. ...

not using power tools, so i need something very fast to shape, with just files and sandpaper, what would you reccomend? (keep it cheap)

Knife handle material
I am almost done making a set of coco bolo handles for a blank, but I have found that this wood takes very long to sand/file/dremel into shape. What woods would be considerably easier to work with?

If I was using stock removal on 1095, would it be easy to drill holes around my blade, hack saw it out and file to a good shape, or would it be too hard?

for a begginer what metal should I use? The only custom knifemaking I have ever done is madehandles for a texas utilit blank.

Hukk, if I get the 1080 from Kelly, will i be able to drill, hacksaw and file it right away? And after I shape and sharpen it will heat treating be an option necessity?

I just read a tutorial and it said if I use 440c stainless, and use coals to get it to a nonmagnetic stage, then soak it in canola or motor oil it will heat treat. Then to temper you can put it in an over an 425 degrees for 2 hours. Would this method work? Also with 440c could I cut it into basic sh...

Oh and also if I want to buy a piece of plain steel to make my blade out of without fancy equipment, what material can I use that doesn't require any heat treating or tempering or anything?
