Re: Case Bulldog
After that in '76, '77', '78, '79 and onward they produced annual limited run stag sets. The key here is that in 8/70 stag handled pocket knives were discontinued from the standar d Case product line. All my stag handled 5207 mini trappers were produced between 1980 - 2020, so would they all be con...

Re: Case Bulldog
This "last model" is the most commonly found - made from '66-'67 until August 1970 when Case discontinued all stag handled knives. I assume you mean that Case discontinued all stag handled Bulldog knives, since obviously Case produced many other patterns with stag handles post 1970. Well ...

Re: Case Bulldog
Case introduced the 5172 with the BULLDOG blade etch and wooden box in early 1962. These early ones with have CASE over XX on the front tang, 5172 on the back tang , and HAND MADE IN USA deep etched on the blade black. This variation was made from 1962 til the end of 1964. The way these were stamped...

Re: Legit NYKC Saddlehorn?
Amazing bone handles - frame and handles appear to be old.
The blades, unfortunately are modern fakes - tang stamp letters are too rounded, blades exhibit a modern look with modern grind/polish and no swedges.

Seems as though there is a lot of confusion about what true "Rogers" bone is. Maybe someone can help clear up the confusion by posting some photos of antique pocketknives have jigged brown bone handles that are NOT Rogers bone. That may help educate us as to what does and does not constit...

Sorry to say this, but that whole knife is a bad fake. Try to find a pic of a real one and the differences will become evident.

Re: anybody else think GEC is losing it?
My main interest has always been in the older knives of quality brands - but in terms of newer traditional slipjoints I always liked the Queen/Schatt knives including all of the other brands that Queen made on contract up until about 2012 including Moore Maker, Cripple Creek, etc. So I tend to judge...

Please look at this knife that I just posted under Q&A...is it a tang mark from an odd PA knife company?

STAINLESSS CUTLERY CO...but NOT the one you know...
I just picked up this small senator penknife in a knife lot. When I opened the blade and looked at the tang, I initially assumed that the knife was a STAINLESS CUTLERY CO made by Camillus. However, the markings are significantly different on this knife: Front tang: STAINLESS/CUTLERY/COMPANY Back Tan...

Great photo!!
Makes me wonder...at that time and with that work force...how many pocket knife patterns did the company offer, and how many finished pocketknives did they crank out every day/week/month/year?

OOPS!!! My bad, Ken. I should have double checked on the 5202 1/2. I could recall seeing a 5214 1/2 but not a 5202 1/2.

It is a 52031 1/2, 3-3/4" long closed. The 02 was never made in stag, never made with long pull. And the OP knife appears to be 3-3/4" closed.

Re: Broken Back Spring 1989 Case Trapper
Thanks for the feedback everyone! I should have thought about calling Case first. I have heard they do a pretty good job, and I would think they would cover this under their warranty. I have never used them before, but this may be a good opportunity. Not sure which route I am going to go on cleanin...

Re: Schrade 834B Smooth Black - not in catalogs?
I just got this Schrade NY USA 834 with smooth black handles. The tang stamp is SCHRADE NY USA 834. The box says 834B. I could not find 834 with black handles in any of the Schrade 70's to 80's catalogs - does anyone know the production years on this one? My thought is, maybe it was a non-catalog i...

I cam to that same conclusion. I even asked someone who was a Schrade production employee during those years and he did not know.black mamba wrote: ↑Mon Feb 12, 2024 4:30 am My sense is that the NY USA tang stamp was only used for a few years, say up until about 1976. No proof of that, just what I have noticed.

Oops - I think I copied the wrong picture. I’ll see if I can fix it. Ken Edit: I fixed it. eBay made a software revision update a while back, making it much more difficult to copy pictures. Maybe that wasn’t their objective (it wouldn’t surprise me though) but it was nonetheless the result. Ken; I ...

In the '90's, the "glue-in" shields were more elongated with pointed ends, similar to the older ones. They gradually reduced them. Look at a modern 3318.

The XX 18 is real, but was rehandled and cleaned at the Case factory. Note the newer style shield and the newer looking bone coloring and jigging. Same for the XX '33 pattern that he has, exact same restoration - again, note the shield. The '47 Tested has been buffed and rehandled, but they used th...
