I have hard Arkansas stones...some so hard and white they are translucent. but the Spyderco combined with a strop is almost foolproof and fast...I have just gotten use to the easy way... :D

those stones don't just gather dust however...they get a good bit of use when I do trigger work.

Willie was good enough to send me a couple of the old light filaments :D

The smaller one is coarser than the longer one. Small one is 4", the larger 4 1/2". They are small enough to fit in a coat pocket or keep one in your glove box.

They work well, I was surprised just how well they work! ::nod:: ::tu::

Thanks Willie

Still learning but I use a Norton Stone. Has fine and coarse side. Seems to work ok.

i have heard of people using everything from smooth river rocks to bottoms of coffee cups. at one time i finished out on old razor hones but find the coarse to fine diamond hones then finishing up on spydie ceramic hones & leather strops to work well these days. many ways to skin a cat but if you try diamonds it's good to go easy since they remove metal fast.--HiPower

Being the tool junkie that I am, I've pretty much tried em all with varying results.
Still can't resist trying out a new Mouse Trap when I find one though, so I recently purchased one of these.
http://www.v-sharp.com/video_play2.php?VideoID=7

It just came yesterday so I've only tried it out on a couple of old boning knives but I'm really liking what I'm seeing so far.

I can see the possibility of scratching the sides of a blade, so for a real safe queen a little masking tape might be in order first, but if it's a safe queen it probably doesn't need sharpening anyways.
Fortunately, most of my knives are users, so it's not an issue for me.

I'll probably still use my hard Arky's on smaller pocket knife blades, but there's definatly a place on my work bench for this piece.
Being made in the US doesn't hurt matters either.

Norton stones are great but it is critical to keep the angle constant.
If you can do that, you can sharpen most anything with them.

I was wondering if sombody was gonna start a thread about sharpening sooner or later. I like to sharpen my pocket knives, It' kind of meditative. My favorite time to do it is in the evening while sitting in front of the TV. I use the ceramic stone from my lansky kit and a home made strop, and that's about all it takes. Ive tried all sorts of quick sharpeners and kits, but I've always been more comfortable working by hand. I got the Lansky set several years ago, and they work great for sure, I just dont like all the set up and adjusting, and smaller knives seem to move and slip. I like the stones that came with it though, I just like to hold them rather than use the bracket. I'm proud of the edge I can achieve by hand, and with a little honing they stay sharp for a long time. I would really like to get some larger bench stones, maybe a med. fine and ultra fine. I'm glad this thread was started, now I can see what ya'll are using. I hear a lot about Arkansas stones, and i hada real small one once. Are there different grades of these stones, and where's a good place to find some?

I use ceramic stix and I keep an old ceramic tile in my tool box for a touch up. It took me a little practice before I became a believer in ceramic but it gets them hair sharp.

i probably have as many edge producing devices as knives. diamonds & ceramics seem to work very well these days with the influx of super tuff alloys. for serious new bevels i go to the edge pro.--Hipower

I first use a Speedy Sharp to put a working edge on my knife and then use a Smiths Sharpening Sticks and finish up with a piece of leather.

Most times I use the RazorsEdge (Ely, MN) coarse and fine stones with their blade guide and it works great. But I still love my 50+ year old soft and hard Arkansas stones mounted in a two way wooden box that my Dad gave me 40 years ago. Gotta love old school! Like someone mentioned, sharpening is an enjoyable and relaxing exercise.

Love those boxes the stones came in mb. Neat to see. That's the same kind of stone I use and most people around here use. We call those wet rocks.

I got a new to me/ and I hope it's a/ Belgian stone today at the Flea Market.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
This is my third stone of this type. (Center stone) This one is huge. It's 10 1/2" X 1 3/4" X 2 7/8".
I paid $6 for this thing. A small stone on e-bay going for a ridicules $300. Can't be right.
After washing this stone I touched up my kitchen knives on it. It's the real deal, I think.

Thank you, Scott.
I'm thinking Belgian because of the color and Belgian water stones seem to be notorious for having a unfinished base. I don't know why.
Also these stones just feel different from other stones like the "earth stones", as I like to call them, from Arkansas. And I think they are softer than the Arkansas stones in general.
I sure like the way the steel and stone respond.
I read about them in the past and they are highly sought after. I just don't have the time to research this stuff to be as informed as I would like to be. As with many other things I might be curious about.
Also, both of my larger stones are scratched on the top surface similarly. It doesn't affect blade sharpening but it's a strange thing.
