Sharpening Stones........How do you sharpen your knives?
Re: Sharpening Stones........How do you sharpen your knives?
i probably have as many edge producing devices as knives. diamonds & ceramics seem to work very well these days with the influx of super tuff alloys. for serious new bevels i go to the edge pro.--Hipower

I first use a Speedy Sharp to put a working edge on my knife and then use a Smiths Sharpening Sticks and finish up with a piece of leather.

Most times I use the RazorsEdge (Ely, MN) coarse and fine stones with their blade guide and it works great. But I still love my 50+ year old soft and hard Arkansas stones mounted in a two way wooden box that my Dad gave me 40 years ago. Gotta love old school! Like someone mentioned, sharpening is an enjoyable and relaxing exercise.

Love those boxes the stones came in mb. Neat to see. That's the same kind of stone I use and most people around here use. We call those wet rocks.

I got a new to me/ and I hope it's a/ Belgian stone today at the Flea Market.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
This is my third stone of this type. (Center stone) This one is huge. It's 10 1/2" X 1 3/4" X 2 7/8".
I paid $6 for this thing. A small stone on e-bay going for a ridicules $300. Can't be right.
After washing this stone I touched up my kitchen knives on it. It's the real deal, I think.

Re: Sharpening Stones........How do you sharpen your knives?
Thank you, Scott.
I'm thinking Belgian because of the color and Belgian water stones seem to be notorious for having a unfinished base. I don't know why.
Also these stones just feel different from other stones like the "earth stones", as I like to call them, from Arkansas. And I think they are softer than the Arkansas stones in general.
I sure like the way the steel and stone respond.
I read about them in the past and they are highly sought after. I just don't have the time to research this stuff to be as informed as I would like to be. As with many other things I might be curious about.
Also, both of my larger stones are scratched on the top surface similarly. It doesn't affect blade sharpening but it's a strange thing.
