Edge testing starts

Post by old4570 »

Now this is for FMI ( For my information ) ..
Im just sharing what happens , so lean back and relax .

Edge is a Whetstone grinder / knife sharpener edge .. ( Rough cut ) And is my starting point . ::groove:: Got to start some where !
Anyways . edge testing has begun . There is only one way from here , and that's ever finer .
The grinder lays down about a 17 degree bevel , and that's what I will be following on the guided knife sharpener .

I have already completed the 180 grit diamond cut test and will post it shortly .
This 535 is a mystery steel , so ? The only thing of relevance is how fine the edge is and how much rope gets cut .

The 180 grit diamond cut ( guided knife sharpener ) edge was laid over the whetstone grinder edge .
We are talking 17 degrees ( one side or a total of 34 degrees ) , which is a little tight for me .
I generally like 22 degrees myself . But , we are doing it this way for now .

Around 150 slices ( where the whetstone edge failed ) the 180 grit diamond cut edge rolled ( me thinks ) .. Felt like it .
Anyways , call it where you like . It was the better edge . The knife is of questionable origin and blade steel . ::woot::
But for the test , maters not . I'm calling the steel average and works as far as my needing a average knife for the test . ( average steel )
For those who need to know ( for me ) decent D2 returns a 450 fail with my 180 grit diamond cut edge @ 22 degrees . ( My working edge )

Anyways , next I have to make the edge finer again .. Be a lot of work , so relax - crack a cold one - and chill !

So before anyone gets their panties in a knot , edge is magnified between 100x and 150x ::woot::

This will be the next edge put to the rope ..

EDGE ! Was first done with a 400 grit diamond cutter , then with a 400 grit oxide stone .. Then stropped on some leather in case there was any bur left behind .

Cutting rope at 400 grit - Edge is magnified over 100x ( closer to 150x - but those variables - so ill just call it 100x + )

First 20 slices were like a laser scalpel . And after that it just slowly started to not cut quite so well . ( That average steel ) ::teary_eyes::

Fail was 150 .. Edge did not roll this time , so no need to change bevel angle (?)
Next edge will be 800 grit .

I will say , those first 20 slices of rope were amazing ::ds:: @ 400 grit . ( Just a shame about the blade steel )

800 grit edge !
1) Due to technical issues I had to splice N dice the video ( I really hate that - so apologies )
2) Edge went to a 200 fail
3) Edge was a ceramic 800 grit ( Which might be finer than a 800 grit stone )
4) I will have to bye pass 1500 because it's little different to the ceramic 800
5) Next edge will be 3000 grit and after that 5000 grit ( I have nothing finer than 5000 )

3000 grit ..

A) This is a very average knife , with very average steel . I am not going to polish out every scratch . ::tounge::
B) The camera shows the edge better than my eyes can see
C) And then 100x + Magnified
D) This will be the edge taken to the rope next .

Ok !! ::td::

Problems .. That 3000 grit edge is rolling .. ::mdm::
I think it started rolling at 50 slices and become a problem at 100 ..
I stropped it on the pine and it was super sharp again ::uc::

Just looks like the steel cant handle the 17 degree edge . ( 17 x two sides = 34 )
So next , I will go back to the 22 degree bevel I usually do on my knives .. And start from the 180 grit diamond .
Now we can compare bevels ( angles ) . ::hmm::
This was not an expensive knife , so a few years worth of wear and tear is neither here nor there .
After this knife I will move onto the R3 Remington for some Nostalgia

R3 Remington ...

Tested 180 grit guided edge , and the whetstone grinder edge .
Both edges failed @ 100 .. This is consistent with previous results .
Next I will try a 400 grit edge ::hmm:: Though I dont see it going past 100 ( it might ) .

Been busy , and stuffed up the video . Will video the 400 grit edge .

R3 with a 400 grit edge cuts rope ..

180 grit 22deg guided edge fails @ 100
Whetstone grinder fails @ 100
400 grit 22deg guided edge fails @ 100 - I sense a theme !
