Sheath for a hay rake tine knife.

Post by Rossr »

I forged this knife out of an old hay rake tine. Since I have the new stitching pony I decided to lace this sheath. Probably a bit fancy for such a basic knife but it was fun and i am happy with the results. Open to comments and especially ways to improve. The belt loop for this one is something i never tried seems ok though.

Cool knife and sheath!

I’ve never seen knives made from hay rake tines before. Very cool.

Thanks Colonel. They are forged out of the old dump rake tines , lot of blacksmiths and knife forgers make them. They are fun to make and since you don't need to make a handle they are quick too. Fun stuff

Ahhh I see, that makes more sense. I was thinking that was an awful long rake tine. I was thinking of a wind rowing rake. Are they pretty mild steel or do they have decent carbon? Either way that’s as cool as all get out! Well done.

You are a very talented person: forge your own knife and then make a super fine sheath that looks like it is lined with deer skin. And i bet you made the vice like device that is holding the sheath. And you probably made your own forge.
I hold you in very high regard. I have none of these abilities.

Carbon for sure. They usually hold a decent edge. Everyone seems to agree they are carbon but what content beats me

Kj, thanks for the kind words. I'm just stubborn and keep trying stuff. Sometimes it works sometimes I make scrap!

The sheath is lined with deer skin or at least I think its deer. That piece was a hunk of unmarked I had. The main leather is wicket and Craig. Dyed skirting.

Yes I did make the clamp it's a stitching pony . Theres another thread on here I posted the pics.

I kinda made my forge. The propane burner I had and then I made the forge body from fire brick and angle iron.

We all are capable of amazing things trick is to keep trying and improving!

Very good. Thank you for all the explanation. Like I said before, knife and sheath are both outstanding.

Kind words for sure Thank you.

Anyone can do it just try stuff and have fun. Nothing there is new or original. Just stuff I've learned by reading books, watching you tube, reading forums etc. I always figure being stubborn helps cause I just keep doing stuff till I'm happy with it.

Guess all I'm trying to say is try stuff you may be amazed what ability you have. Have fun on the journey. I never knew I'd like working leather. Knives got me in to sheath making and now I do more leather work than knives.

Best
