East wing axe sheath
East wing axe sheath
Folks,
This older eastwing has been around a while. It's a small axe was originally a gentleman's boy scout axe many moons ago. The original sheath was done. Dry rot and age. The axe had unintentionally.been left outside and when found was covered with surface rust. So a quick clean up(I failed to take a before pic). And it was Into the leather shop. I did sand the cracked varnish from the handle and added a new coat.
Using the original sheath I made this new one. The original had a pine cone impression on the front so I tried to minic that. On the back of the sheath was his name written in cursive. I'm told his Mother wrote it. So for posterity sake I cut it out and sewed it on the back.
I copied the original and realized in my haste I didnt put a welt in it. Which is there to help protect the stitches. However the original was thinner leather and didnt have it either.
So that's it always open to improvements.

That really is nice work. It looks great! BTW, those Estwings are good hatchets. I know that because when I left my Dad's Estwing out in a sagebrush pasture in 1962 he was not a happy man.
Re: East wing axe sheath
thank you sir.
I suspect that was not a good scenario for you . Kind words thankstongueriver wrote: ↑Sat Sep 05, 2020 7:04 pm That really is nice work. It looks great! BTW, those Estwings are good hatchets. I know that because when I left my Dad's Estwing out in a sagebrush pasture in 1962 he was not a happy man.

Re: East wing axe sheath
My dad used an Estwing hammer for 40 years, and I still have it. I know they made fixed blade hunting knives also, but I have never seen one in person.
Re: East wing axe sheath
That is really quite nice!!!
Re: East wing axe sheath
Great job! You've matched the original almost exactly. The ones they make today have a Taiwanese-made nylon sheath. It cleans easy, and is very resistant to wear and tear; but they don't look as good.
I do wish they still had the nail puller notch. One of the models they make today has a "tent peg puller" notch, but it's too huge for any nail. I have the hatchet (first Estwing I bought), knife (the 4" Bowie), and hammer. Their hammers, seriously are the best on the market. I bought one here a month of two ago, and I now grab it first.

Most excellent, great looking sheath and handle refurb!
Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!

Thanks for all the kind words.
I'm a sucker for a nice leather cover just something about them.
I have to agree on the eastwing hammers it's the one I grab the most too. That axe sure took a nice edge too.
