Boy scout knife slip
Boy scout knife slip
I have two active sons in boy scouts and I help out as a leader. I usually teach totin chip which teaches knife axe and saw safety including sharpening, cleaning proper use etc.
I found a 50 questions quiz and offered it up to any scout who wanted to take it. Highest score gets a knife. Well out of 23 scouts. 2 decided to take it. I was shocked. So I decided each gets a knife. Nothing fancy a 2 blade imperial and a steel warrior 2 blade. I made up a knife slip for each with the bsa emblem.
Just wanted to share

Good on ya!
Honestly, though, it does disturb me a bit there were only two willing to accept the challenge of the test.
Unfortunately, I believe it speaks volumes about today's younger generation, and, dare I say, even much of today's society as a whole.
Keep doing what you're doing, Ross!!

Hi Ross,
Man those slips are really nice! And the knives also! Can't believe that was not enough to get them all motivated. Good on you anyways, for working with kids like that!
If you like, you could post those slips on this thread. They are really beautiful!

Could you tell me, how do you get the BSA emblem into the leather? Is it like branding a cow?
Anyways, very nice work! I love em!

If I may...
Tom, the majority of designs you see on leather are stamped in with a metal stamp
https://www.google.com/search?q=tandy+l ... 46&bih=920
Dampen the leather to soften it, set your stamp of choice in place, then smack the stamp with a rawhide mallet.
Many intricate patterns are created by stamping the same design stamp side by side over the area you want stamped.
My uncle did a lot of leather work and I watched him a few times. Looking back, I wish I had shown a greater interest and asked him to teach me.

Steve,
Yes I guess I'm not really shocked. And I agree sad sign of the times. On the flip side we had 4 adult leaders around they day we sldidnit. All 4 of us took the quiz. We did it just for fun and to see what we knew. No prize for us.
Also leather work is pretty easy to get into and with some.basic tools you can make some.nice stuff. Give it a.go! Happy.to answer any questions if you like.
TPK What steve said is how I did it.and with that stamp. I dont sell any boy scout stuff from my leather shop cause I never got licensed from bsa. But I do make up stuff for the scouts here and there for fun.
