Hank Williams 98th birthday

Post by Ridgegrass »

Thinking of Old Hank tomorrow 9/17. Happy 98th!
Good day to get out those old 78's and all the reissues for some genuine old country. J.O'.

My all time favorite country singer. He was only 29 when he died. Imagine what he could have done if he lived longer.

You bet! Kieth Whitley, Lefty Frizell, George Jones, etc., etc. Seems great talent comes with great troubles. ::shrug:: J.O'.

I agree that the creative types seem to have a predisposition to substance abuse. In Hanks case his was fueled by chronic life long back pain. He had spina bifida. Surgery to correct it made it worse.

Hank was/is da' man. If it wasn't for him, Chet, and Elivs; guitar today wouldn't be what it tis. Off the top of my head, I can't think of anyone else who gave so much to the art... And for just that, we all should be eternally grateful.
Chronic pain ain't no fun, I don't hold anything against Him for overdosing. He should be the exact reason, why we need an influx of cash into research and treatment. Maybe if people had listed, instead of scoffing it off, He would still be with us... Same thing with Elvis, they say he had severely ill with his nervous system (that's why he could move). And that's why he overdosed on painkillers, got to the point of unlivable.
Substance abuse is a bugger, what can we the ill do?

The barber shop that I frequent in Fort Payne, Alabama, has the barber chair where Hank Williams got his final haircut. He Was an Alabama native, and often stopped in little towns like that when traveling.
If you ever find yourself in Fort Payne, stop by Beason's Barber shop. They also keep some razors, knives, and long guns on display. It is an old family-owned business, and there are fewer of those every year.
Jesus is life.
Everything else is just a hobby.

Thanks Reverend. Love to hear stories about my music idols.
I played a club called The Hawaiian Room in Brunswick Maryland some years ago. We were setting up and I noticed an "X" on the old wooden stage. I asked the owner what it meant and he said Patsy Cline had stood on that spot when she was a teenager singing in the club. Gave me the bumps the whole show standing there.
Ever heard Alan Jackson's, "Midnight In Montgomery" ? Great and spooky song about Hank.

Old Hank would be 99 today. Think I'll get him up on the stereo and play along. :D J.O'.
