Looking for info

Keen Kutter was first used as a knife brand by Simmons Hardware Company in 1870. The trademark was used on the highest quality tools and cutlery Simmons offered.

Looking for info

Post by Waxpad »

Folks, I have my Granddaddy’s Keen Kutter 3-blade, cattleman (?), yellow handles. It’s marked on the tang KS316.
Can’t seem to find any information about this number.
He passed in 1977, at the age of 89, so I can imagine this knife is from the ‘40’s or 50’s.
Any help is appreciated.

Does it look like this K317 only with yellow comp instead of pearl? From Alvin Sellins' Keen Kutter Pocket Knives. ::welcome:: to AAPK too!

1967redrider, I’m not home this weekend, but when I get home Monday, I’ll send a picture of it.
It is a 3-blade (clip/Spey/sheepsfoot)

I'm just going by memory but I think that would be a stockman pattern made by Schrade in the 1950's, maybe early 60's?

Perhaps you’re correct. I don’t remember when grandpa bought it, so that time frame may be right.

That's a Stockman, I'll see if I can find something close. Looks more like a KS315Y. What's the closed length, thanks!

4” closed length
I think you’re right, but the blade marking of “KS316” had me fooled. Thanks!

Sellens only had 3 catalogs from the Shapleigh era to base his book on; 1940, 1942 and 1958. I am sure there are many Keen Kutters model numbers from that time period that did not make it into his book. I believe that your knife was made sometime in the 1950s by Schrade. It is a nice one, I really like that yellow celluloid. ::tu::
