Who's into S & M?

Schatt & Morgan knives were first manufacturer back in 1890. The Queen Cutlery company made most of the more recent examples, but Schatt had its own plant in its earlier years that cranked out the oldies. There is no shortage of fantastic Schatt & Morgan knives in existance that have been made over the brand's long & storied history.

Phil, quite often I carry an old #49, it's a tough old knife. I've got several #49's laid back as well as #52's, just don't have the nerve to break out a new one until this old one wears out or is lost. The two in my avatar are '58-'60 stamps, the EDC is the one on the bottom. Great user knives in my book!

I agree. From what I can tell, the first time Queen listed the #49 was 1954. Of course, I could be wrong. The two knives in your avatar are awesome! Hope everyone is having a good start of the week!

Well was wrong, have a couple of S&M /Queens left that had forgotten about and a Bear. But reason for this next set of pics is a question for you all here? This single blade swing guard was also a club knife back when was active with Badger knife club here in Wi. The ? Is the blade etch / logo. At the time was great, now wish it wasn’t there. Does this make it less or more anything to a person not in the club.Been thinking about posting them for sale with The Badger group, but ! It seems that as I am focusing more on Collecting, rather than accumulating, these club knifes,NKCA,BKC ,Etc,etc,just don’t appeal to me. Thanks folks, be safe.

Paid a premium for it but you just don't see gnarly stag like this too much anymore so I couldn't let it get away. No regrets here! :-D

Garry...I hear ya. And it truly pains me to think of all the S&Ms I've owned and sold over the years. Wish I had hung onto them now. Oh well, at least I'll always have the photos. ::tear::

I actually had to "pull the trigger" multiple times to win that gnarly Barlow because there was a lot of competition for it on the eBay auction. To be honest, had it been offered "Buy It Now" for the same price I ended up paying for it, I don't know if I would have bought it. That's the thing about auctions, once you get hooked into bidding on a knife you really want, it's tough to stop.

Do you have a particular pattern in mind, or just any S&M that tickles your fancy?

FWIW: I'm particularly partial to the Keystone Series I (1991). All the Keystone Series are top quality knives, but I think S&M really hit a grand slam home run that year...especially with the 042 151 Mini Trapper (which is probably my number one favorite Mini-T of all time!) ::nod::

I think most S&M collectors would agree that the Daniels Family Cutlery (DFC) era S&Ms are not as well made IMHO...or, perhaps it would be more accurate to say they're not as consistently well made...as the S&M knives from earlier years.

Loving your knife Q, I agree, quality got inconsistent but when S&M were good they were very, very good even towards the end.

That is the huge downside of buying online, you cannot get to see and feel what you are purchasing. I saw a S&M online the other day, when you had a really close look you could see some gaps, and you do not know if that is the one you are getting, or if that is one they pulled out for a photo shoot. ::paranoid::

I read some where that the later S&M knives that come in a white box are no where near as good as the knives that come in a brown box. Any one out there experienced in this Brand have a view on this ?

As a general rule, that is very often true; however, that doesn't necessarily mean the later year (white box) S&Ms are junk...the quality just seems to be inconsistent so it's hit and miss. I have some DFC era knives that are every bit as nice as the pre-DFC era S&Ms, but I am less inclined to buy a S&M when I see "DFC" on the tang stamp.

BTW--Daniels Family Cutlery is the maker of Tuna Valley and Excelsior knives, both of which are super high quality production knife brands that make limited runs. You can check them out here;

Here's my latest S&M pick up: 3½" Dogleg Jack/Mini Trapper "Dollar Knife Co." (it came in a brown box!)
