New Bolster Embellishment

Post by Jeffinn »

This bolster embellishment design is a cross between a diamond pattern and maybe a snakeskin pattern. I’ve still got some work to do on these but they’re coming along nicely.

That looks like a job to get the lines straight and evenly spaced.

It’s tedious work and my back issues make it difficult to work more than a few hours at a time without a break.
I start out with a small steel ruler and a needle point scribing tool. Once all the lines are laid out I use a jewelers saw to get some starting grooves cut. Sometimes the jewelers saw blade walks off of the scribe line a bit but it usually stays pretty close. Then I work with a couple of different three sided files to open up the grooves a bit. The files also have a tendency to walk off of the line a bit. On some knives I finish the grooves with a small circular file.
The lines on most of my bolsters are never perfect but I really don’t expect them to be. Between all of the handcutting, filing and the polishing off of all the sharp edges there’s bound to be some variation in spacing, depth of cut etc. I just try to get a nice looking final product.
Not sure what handle material Im going to use on this one. I just got in some new bone and some new Micarta. I’m leaning towards the tan Micarta but I’m always partial to bone of any type.
More to come!
Jeff

Here's the same knife finished up with some brown canvas micarta handles and a new high polished blade. I added a little file work to the liners and lockbar to dress it up a bit.

You certainly do NOT disappoint! First, I am impressed with your creativity in thinking of this. Secondly, I understand that it took more tedious work and time than most people realize.
But you sure made the end result worth it!
