Great vid on how to cut a crescent nail nick with a drill press

Post by Lansky1 »

Just thought I'd share - how to cut a crescent nail nick without proper metal working equipment has been a head scratcher for me for years. I've tried the dremel wheel method for cutting a straight nail nick slot with limited success. For me, toughest part is going to be mounting the blade into a simple drill press vice firmly enough without scratching the blade (as I won't be taking the knife apart to free the blade like the video shows) or perhaps I'll mold epoxy putty around the blade to hold it in place in a wooden block (with tape on the blade ends for insurance - as there's very little pressure required to cut the nick). Anyways, I'm excited to come up with a way to cut a decent crescent nail nick - those spey blades on my trappers are living on borrowed time - there is gonna be some full size trappers with wharncliffe's / sheepsfoots in my future... ::super_happy::

Thanks for posting this, it definitely gives some food for thought.
I'm not sure I would rely on scotch tape for securing the blade to the angle iron but it looked like it worked okay for him.
A person should be able to set up something like this at a very reasonable cost (assuming they already have a drill press).

Very interesting video indeed.

On a side note. Everyone I know who does a lot of metal work welding cutting grinding etc. Has that same dry spontaneous cough.

Tried about a year ago to deepen a nail nick on a old Case knife.
I thought for sure a Dremel or drills that a dentist uses would work.
Total failure. This looks pretty interesting. Thanks for the post.
