A couple more from my shop...

Post by orvet »

I wanted to add a couple more knives to the Customized Factory Knives before I move on to the restoration forum.

This first knife was made for me by my friend Gene Martin of Provision Forge in Williams Oregon. Both Jean and his wife Sally are Marines which means we were good friends from almost the moment we met! Gene operates the forage and makes the knives and his wife Sally makes some very nice mosaic pins. Gene's a great guy and does a lot For the Oregon Knife Collectors Association.
I bought this blade Gene probably three years ago and lots of things happened, Covid not the least among them so it has taken me some time to finish it.

The blade is ATS-34, one of my favorite steels to use. It is getting hard to find and Gene said it was some of the last ATS-34 he had. I believe they have stopped making it now and when you can find some old stock it's pretty expensive. The handle is Culpepper's CSB (curve stag bone) but I'm not sure of the color I think it may have been a limited run of apricot they did some time back. I also handmade the sheath. It's not the fanciest in the world but it is functional and effective

That is a beautiful knife Dale! VERY nicely executed and that bone is KILLER!

I'm glad you found some good friends in Gene and Sally. Looks like both do some nice work in their specialty areas.
Did Sally make those pins?

Thank you Mike. Honestly I don’t know if Sally made those pins are not. It’s one of my favorite patterns I have bought them from various sources. If it is Sally's I think it is her #B20. It’s hard to get a particular pattern from her at a show she sells out so quickly. If you want a selection of mosaic pins you have to go her table first thing on the first day, or as I have done in the past order them from her.

Gene and Sally are both great people. I can’t say enough good things about them. You can Google them at Provision Forge or use this link: https://customknife.com

I had intended to post this one last night but got to sleepy. After rereading what I wrote I'm glad I waited!

I made this one from a blank I got on eBay.
The seller on eBay says the following about this blade:
"This is an original unfinished rough ground knife blade blank by Seizo Imai in Seki, Japan circa early 2000s. This blade has been heat treated/hardened. Based on Loveless's popular "City Knife", it is made of ATS-34 and is hollow ground with tapered tang."
Aside from this information I don't know a great deal about this knife. I do know that Seizo Imai made a lot of knives for Parker and a lot of other companies, plus I understand he made knives under his only name well, very creative and some of his other designs are very nice as well!

On this build I affixed the brass guard by soldering it into place. The handle material I used is African Blackwood. Since the handle was rather blocky, I thought I would give it some contour for a better grip. Since I was making it for myself, I intentionally made it wider than my first design instinct so that it would fit my large hands. The knife is now comfortable to my hand.

I also made the sheath for this one. The blade is very sharp, so I lined this sheath with a tough plastic sheath liner often used with Scandinavian style knives. The liners were too wide to fit the knife snugly, so I lined it with a strip of leather on either side, so it fits nice and snug now! I’m quite pleased with the results.
Blades deal
Originally, I made both of these knives for myself, though I may only keep one of them, I haven’t decided which one I want to keep. I don’t carry a fixed blade too often though it would be nice to have a little one that’s not too bulky.

I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Technical data:
OAL: 7"
BLADE LENGTH: 3-3/8"
GUARD: Brass
PINS: Brass
LANYARD TUBE LINER: Brass
BLADE: ATS-34 made in the early 2000's
