Never Seen This Pattern Made By Case--Is It Genuine?

Post by QTCut5 »

I've seen this "Shark" pattern made by other companies but never by Case (in fact, I own two that were both made by Taylor Cutlery). I'm not saying it's a fake, but I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable about rare Case knives will know. (BTW: I am NOT interested in purchasing this knife mainly because I think the stag is unattractive...looks more like something found on a Parker or Frost knife, IMHO.)

Heaven help us, that’s terrible! ::barf:: ::barf::

Nothing like that ever came from Case.

As Mumbleypeg said, this is a complete fake. Case never made this pattern. It is not a prototype either. The knife is cold stamped, very poorly. The stag doesn't match Case stag from the XX era and you are right not to be interested in it.

Although this one does look bad, possibly Case made a knife like this in 1940,1964??

Knifedb said it was rare.

Interesting. I’ve found very few errors on knifedb, but I have found a few and advised the webmaster accordingly. IMHO the knife shown in the posted link to knifedb is not a genuine Case. The stag doesn’t appear period-correct on either knife, but more importantly the pattern stamp on the knifedb photo of the knife appears cold stamped and appears to have been done one number at a time.

My reference books (both Levine’s Guide and Sargent’s ) say the 36 pattern was a 4-1/8 inch equal end jack.

I don't know if this is a meaningful "clue" or not, but I see that the tang stamp on the OP knife has a "closed C" and the bolster stamp shows an "open C". Did Case ever put these two different letter styles on the same knife? ::skeptic::

(FWIW---I also see that the seller has reduced the price from $505 down to $401.) ::hmm::

I see now the seller changed the listing again to $295 OBO. They also changed the wording to say “I have been told by several old-time Case collectors that they have never seen this knife. So I may have the only prototype.” May have! Clever.

The listing has ended so I guess someone bought it. ::shrug:: Someone either way dumber, or way smarter, than me. ::paranoid::
(But I would never have knowingly paid for a knife that questionable).

I just looked at the "completed" auction. The $295 is crossed out and it says "BEST OFFER ACCEPTED". So it appears that some poor fool got themselves a very rare knife indeed! Based on this guy's other knives for sale, and apparent degree of knowledge of Case knives, I suspect that he knows exactly what he is doing. ::td::
