Case Tested?

Post by luckydog64 »

I wanted to ask opinions on this tested knife. It caught my attention, I liked it, but then I questioned handle jigging and red color. Thought it might look too much like 60s or 70s. Real or cobbled? I didn't bid. https://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-CASE-X ... 7675.l2557

I think your suspicion is warranted. Looks like USA era bone (1965 - 1980) to me as well. The shield also looks to be from the same era. The patina (dirt, carbon spotting, etc) on both the handles and the blades looks forced to me instead the result of being naturally aged.

I agree, not Tested era bone or shield. Amazed by people who just read the stamp and throw their money at it. ::dang::

Why's that?:

a) lettering too symmetric

b) "ASE" inset into the "C" not correct

c) ????

Letters are typical of a cold restamped blade. Case tested era knives were hot stamped and usually have more distinctive letters with sharper corners. Really hard to describe, best way is to look at lots of authentic Case Tested stamps to see the differences. There are exceptions to every rule but this knife is not the exception,it is not from the Tested 1920-40 era.

Here is my 2 cents. I am confident the stamp in question is not right. However I will say if you look at any old stamp long enough and hard enough you can probably see something you don't like. So don't get too paranoid about stamps. Many of the things that make them look bad are age related stuff and wear from opening and closing.

Excellent illustration Jerry. I believe that is why folks should read the knife and then see what is stamped on the tang. ::tu::

I was of the impression that case used the open "C" with the block style "S" on some of the late model tested era knives. Am I seeing this shield on this knife?????

The first two shields are from the tested era . The second one has the open C but it has the tall or standing S as some call it. The third shield was used from the USA era into the eighties, it is the one shown on the OP knife.

Good summary Greg. Here’s the other shield used during the Tested era, commonly called the Tested Block Letter shield. To me the best way to describe it is, it looks like it is made of short straight segments connected together, especially on the C and the S. I have only seen this shield on Tested knives.

Looks like they've taken the bait. 16 bids and $252.45 so far. We'll wait and see if they swallow the hook.
