M.S.A. jack knife
M.S.A. jack knife
Here is a proported M.S.A. jack knife. The knife appears be an old frame and blades but the blades have fake stamps. Note the well rounded ends of all the letters in the stamps. I was unable to copy the stamp pictures from the add but if you open the URL you can see the letters much more clearly.
The M.S.A. folding pocket knife story is one of legend, speculation and wishful thinking. This knife is the result of that story and unfortunately will add some fodder to it. May have been a nice knife at one time but now it is a counterfeit. Will be interesting to see how far this auction goes.
The seller says that the knife was previously posted and deleted by eBay. Claims the knife was believed to be genuine by a lot of viewers.

If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Couldn't even spell Gladstone correctly.
Something tells me they didn't make those kinds of mistakes back in the old days.

PS- Well I guess they did make those mistakes LOL! Pointythings clears up the legendary misspelled tang stamp issue below.

GLADESTONE (with an "E") was a typo by Case Brothers. Pretty well documented.

I can't speak knowledgeably about rounded tang stamps, but the tangs themselves don't appear to be ground down.
And, FWIW. there is a ghost imprint of the letter "C" on the closeups of the tang stamps on the eBay listing enlargements.

And I should pull this one out of the safe deposit box for new photos. Photos are from the original eBay listing. It's also spelled "GLADESTONE"

Re: M.S.A. jack knife
It is a REAL pocket knife (folds and cuts) as viewers can attest, but it was not made by Webster Marble.

Where and how, exactly, has that typo been "documented"...I'm not saying that it hasn't been documented, just wondering what the documentation consists of. "Documented" implies that there is some early written letter, message, etc. that can be seen somewhere. "Hearsay" does not constitute documentation.pointythings wrote: ↑Mon Oct 24, 2022 4:51 pm GLADESTONE (with an "E") was a typo by Case Brothers. Pretty well documented.

Most likely in a knife book (can't recall which one at the moment) and a number of "hearsay" mentions online.knifeaholic wrote: ↑Tue Oct 25, 2022 4:10 pm Where and how, exactly, has that typo been "documented"...I'm not saying that it hasn't been documented, just wondering what the documentation consists of. Re: M.S.A. jack knife
Pretty sure there has been at least one article about Marble’s pocket cutlery published in Knife Magazine in the past few years. IIRC the article indicated Marble’s contracted with Case for production of their folding pocket knives, at least early on. I do not recall whether there was anything in the article about typo errors in stamps. I’ll try to find the article. (I have a subscription, but for some reason the on-line “search” on their site isn’t working for me at present). Meanwhile perhaps someone here will remember it and provide more info.
BTW lest anyone be mis-led, my prior comment regarding the OP had nothing to do with the knife itself. I was poking fun at the statement “Claims the knife was believed to be genuine by a lot of viewers.” As repeatedly demonstrated by eBay sales results, one can stamp anything on a knife and “a lot of viewers” will bid on it.
I’m no expert on anything Marbles, and do not pretend to be.

In Levines 4th edition, he states the only pocket knife back in the day
that Marble's was associated with was a Elephant Toe made by Case for Marble's...
Remember Roger from Texas, whose RD is under the AAPK logo...he was the biggest Toe
collector I ever met, and said once that was the holy grail...and at a big Marble's auction
I went to back in Michigan, there was one in it, sold for about $5600.00 back in about 2007
Roger's comment was good enough for me !!!
That Lone Star lad knew his toe's !!!

As rare as an actual folding MSA pocket knife would be is a sure guarantee that the counterfeiters will be at work.

Re: M.S.A. jack knife
Some people have more money than brains. A rumor started back in the 1980's that marbles made some pocket knives in addition to the Case bros Pearl sunfish. Its possible that the counterfeiters made peoples rumors come true.
