Tagging a member

Post by Steve Warden »

One forum I was on sent a notification to an individual if you wanted to get their attention.
All you had to do was type the @ symbol, then the user name. For example, to notify Jerry, I type @jerryd6818 in a post and he would get a notification link to the post I tagged him.

It was handy to let someone know you needed their help or input on something, taking them right to the post needed.

Can that be incorporated with this system?

In the first couple generations of the AAPK software, it would notify us via email if someone was sending us a PM. That was helpful especially for new members to realize they had an incoming message. Technology has changed quite a bit in the years since the first generation of AAPK, today I access the forum buy phone probably more than I do by PC. The phone is a much smaller screen so I often missed the fact that I have an incoming PM.
Would a notification of a PM in a members inbox accomplish the same result as tagging?

Not talking about sending PMs. Already get notifications for that.
I'm talking about a member getting a notification by me typing in a post, example @orvet
You would get a notification that you were tagged in this post, then a link, like when you get quoted, takes you to that post.
If it worked, you would have received a notification that would bring you to THIS post, not the entire thread, just this post.

It would be so much easier than sending a PM to you saying, "Hey Dale, you're wanted over here... viewtopic.php?t=63968
Even then, that just takes you to the thread, not the specific post.

Great idea Steve!
I understand now, I just didn't have my head around the concept, I have not encountered that before. I think that would be an awesome feature!
I am pretty sure Bryan watches this forum closely. But just to ensure that he gets this, I will PM him link to this topic.

Thank you! ::tu::

How does that work? And yes, the tagging would be nice, too. I don't get notification that I have an incoming PM.

What the..........?? Are you talking notification outside of AAPK or within AAPK or at all?

So you got my PM and said, "I go to AAPK and look up at the top to see. If there is a number there under 'private messages,' I reckon I got one. And that is just what I did now." That number is notifying you (a notification, if you will) that you have a PM.

Same for you, Dale?

Sorry if I was confusing. As I said, I see the number as a notification. But that's me.

I don't get an email notifying me of a pm. On another forum I do get an email.

To be clear, the only "notification" that I have a PM is by the number beside PRIVATE MESSAGES at the top of the page here on AAPK.
I do not receive email notifications.

I've never received an email notification that I had a PM. The alerts for forums works fine but nothing for PMs.
