John Lloyd slip joints
Re: John Lloyd slip joints
Never knew that. Thanks. Wonder what the cause was. Since it's the first time one of my knives has cracked like that I won't fret too much.

Re: John Lloyd slip joints
On a pocket knife the cracks are usually at a handle pin and usually happen with the final tap of the makers brass hammer to seat the pin 'just so'.
I have wondered if it is possible that the ivory around the pin does not crack at the time but holds a certain amount of tension from the pressure of the pin and then 'lets go' i.e. cracks at some time later.
Museums recommend ivory be stored at a certain humidity but i think this is a standard recommendation for any old object of value.

This is from a series John did about 9 years ago. According to a letter from him he said "I found brass, bronze, titanium, cast iron, wrought iron, ss, high & low carbon steel, copper, silver. About 12 total if I remember." It was engraved by Tommy Bladwin of Tampa/St. Pete. The steel is CPM154.
Re: John Lloyd slip joints
Just for the record John makes an excellent straight edge also.
Re: John Lloyd slip joints
The engraving on that all metal one is beautiful! I bet it feels solid, in hand

Nothing like metal for a secure feeling.

The swayback with acorn shield & Wharncliffe blade is a beauty ! Perfect flow of handle and blade. It really shows John's fine sense of design and artistry. He knows when to add an embellishment and when to leave it out, as in this knife, giving it such a clean and 'essential' look.
Very fine knife, yet again !

It really is lovely pattern Roland. And it's beautifully executed. I wish the wharncliffe blade appealed to me.

Re: John Lloyd slip joints
A Wharncliffe blade is the only blade profile that fits in with the 'flow' of the handle shape. Any other blade and knife would not look 'right'.

Thanks for sharing joeradza, some real beauties! I have owned a number of John's knives over the years, with different handle materials, Alabama damascus, 52100, gifted them all to gracious folks who put them to use.
Re: John Lloyd slip joints
Thank you. I only have one in damascus, one or two in stainless and the remainder in 52100. Being gifted a knife by John would certainly make someone gracious. I carry them all but two are the main users, a micarta sowbelly and a stag backpocket.Montanaman wrote:Thanks for sharing joeradza, some real beauties! Re: John Lloyd slip joints
A while back I saw John Lloyd comment on a coffin jack knife and I said could you make one in carbon fiber? His answer: EZ PZ. The result speaks for itself. F&F and W&T is superb and just look at that zulu blade. The grinds and the swedge are magnificent.

Wow again. John makes his best knives for you ! Even though all of John Lloyd's knives are very good, every one you have seems even better, like The Best of the Lloyds are in your collection.

He's made about 3,000 so it's not hard to pick and choose.

One of my favorites being I'm a lousy fisherman I can always brag on this one.

Beautiful handles. Micarta ? How does he get the 2-tone colors ?

Sorry for the delay Roland. I don't know but I'll ask the next time we speak. Here's another stag beauty.kootenay joe wrote:Beautiful handles. Micarta ? How does he get the 2-tone colors ?

The last (at this time) are two sowbellies. An amber stag and an Nguni horn with an eagle head shield. Nguni is a type of South African cattle.

Re: John Lloyd slip joints
I don't know how you do it. I check Vince's site regularly and see new Lloyd's almost weekly, but i have yet to see one as 'perfect' as every one that you show. I think we must have seen them all, at least all the 'perfect' ones at least. Then again you post 2 or 3 more !
Beautiful knives you have.
By "perfect" i'm meaning the instant visual appeal. I get this for every one of the Lloyd's you have posted.

Re: John Lloyd slip joints
Thank you Roland but my only claim is to picking them out. Several were bought on the secondary market so it's not as if I have a monopoly. It is a pleasant surprise when one pops up for sale at a fair price as this beauty did last month. It is definitely one of my favorites and as John explained the tang stamp indicates that it is CPM154, an added bonus.

Re: John Lloyd slip joints
This last one looks a bit like the Remington/GEC pattern #23. Does it have a flush & square joint ?
