Here is the next one I want to build

Post by Meridian_Mike »

I was cruising thru the google images, looking at pics of old antique knives and this one poped up. I took a fancy to it and so I am working out the details of how to build it. Here is a couple of pics of what I saw.......
JHH 1.jpg
JHH 3.jpg
SO next, I got to work on drawing out a plan. I found out it is MUCH easier to build a folder if you draw out a "working diagram" before you even start. The "pistol" part of the handle is fatter than I would like so I thinned it a bit. I moved the pins around some so I could (hopefully) get the lock pivot point far enough away from the spring pin point. I may have to do some adjusting but the proof will be in the pudding I guess. I cut out a paper blade to swing back into the case so I could see how the blade would sit inside when closed. AND, I needed to work out the shape of the lock mechanism.
NOW, If y'all see anything I need to fix of change on my diagram, please speak up..... I am open to suggestions.

Below is my diagram with the blade open and with the blade closed...(dotted).
I made the drawing full size on the paper so it will be about 4-1/2" closed. I plan to cut up a copy of the pieces so I can use those as templates.

Christmas is coming up and there is a LOT of scurrying for me to do leading up to the day we set aside to commemorate the birth of our Savior.... SO, not as much shop time as I would WANT.....LOL.
BUT, I hope to get started SOON. The list of "honey do's" even extends into my vacation between Christmas and New Years Day. BUT, Maybe.... just MAYBE, I can find a few minutes to work on my newest obsession....

My ultimate finished product will have an elk skin sheath like the one shown.

Onward!

Mike

I'm envious...I have a custom I am looking to build, but 1. Haven't got my new grinder finished yet and 2. Too many mod projects take up all my shop time.

Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Yep, I will try to take more pics as I go.....
I usually get to working and with my hands all nasty, I just don't grab my phone up to take a pic.
(I built 5 or 6 flint lock rifles and never took the first pic while making them)
I'll try to do better this time.

Well, I'm not too close to either son and my oldest grand child is only 4 now.

All I can get out of my sons is, "Hey dad, can you make me a (such and such) knife?"

AND, NOW, dang it.... my sisters are starting to bug me to make them a knife for their kids and husbands....

SO.... there ya' go..... see what happens when the word gets out....... LOL.

Well.... after a couple of set-backs and re-designs I have got this knife finally moving in a positive direction.

These pics are from early this year....
(the makin's....as my granny used to say...)
IMG_3675.JPG
The blade... roughed out....
IMG_3677.JPG
IMG_3679.JPG
More parts in the rough-out stage....
IMG_3682.JPG
IMG_3686.JPG
Starting the grind..... (I have a tinker-toy belt sander.... For now, that is)
IMG_3690.JPG
The fit-up and design refining stage. I wanted the blade to have a spot to seat and I made a notch in the blade to allow the toggle to keep it closed. So far.... so good.....
BUT.... It don't work yet..... SO.... onward!
IMG_3691.JPG
Cutting me out some liners.....
IMG_3699.JPG
Drilling and pinning for a fit-up of the parts....
IMG_3701.JPG
OK.... here we go..... This was the area I had to try to figure out. After breaking a couple of attempts at a spring... I figured out the spring would have to be THIN and LONG so just a casual finger pressure would be able to release the blade in the open and the closed position.
IMG_3702.JPG
In a side note right here..... I did finally figure out how to do this.... My mock-up works now.... But the knife is still in the rough-in stage so I will up date after I get the scales thinned out and more finished.
Stay tuned!

Mike

Well.... I had to walk away for a while and do another project or 2 to clear my head. The spring solution hit me yesterday so I got back on it. Now I can start shaping the handle and (hopefully) make it a working and cutting knife!
