Two Old and New case xx knives

Post by raincrowe »

I would like to talk about the progression of the case knife company thought-out its history
How the company changed some styles of knives to achieve what it has become today
I think I can show this in some small way with these two Knives
A) 1985 M5F SS stag handle with sheath
B) Case with a line under the Ca... I've haven't seen that stamp before..... handles look to be red stag with sheath
Theses knives appear to be the same pattern but I'm no expert
I would like to know what everyone thinks
Thanks in advance ::tu::

Both knives look to be the same M5F pattern hunter. I believe the difference in style was driven by cost cutting measures. The large round handle of the newer knife requires much less work and material to produce. No splitting or pinning of the stag, much less work and fitting of the pommel as well.

The short tail C stamp on the older knife is not common but is more often seen on this pattern than others in my experience.

It is my belief in general that both pocket knives and fixed blade knives of most companies became less refined over years. Less skilled workers and cheaper construction methods prevailed.

If looking at that two knives and imagining that they were produced by two different custom makers I would say the smaller knife was produced by a much more skilled craftsman.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

I don’t follow the newer Case knives much but I would have guessed the newer knife has been re-handled. Are you sure those are the original handle covers?

The handle on this knife looks really weird. It's disproportionate to the blade. I've seen "fat" Stag before but not like this.

Thank for the comments.... First of all, I will agree the handle looks weird, but it feels great in the hand, and looks good in the sheath
I bought the older one several years before the 1985 model...
I purchased the MF5 along with three others from an individual who worked at a store that was going out of business...
It's been a while but if memory serves me well, rumor has it that were they special made knives for dealers only or salesman samples
The other knives are as follow....
1) 516-5 SS..... (2) 523-5 SS )3) 5 Finn SS.... all dated 1985 and have handles the same just different sizes
With the information I got I believe they are original but who knows ::tu:

Kind of surprised that with a name like XX CASE XX you don't recognize this as an original Case knife. Case made a lot of "not so nice" looking knives and this series of hunters were rather silly looking with the cylindrical stag handles and thin brass pommel plates. Like Wayne says, just cheaper manufacturing processes, but they certainly lack the good looks of the earlier Case hunters.

I agree with all of the above. However, Case did make one decent looking knife with the "cylindrical" stag handle, and that was the Small Game Knife.

How do they compare with the Kodiak Case XX... Hand made in U.S.A.?
