Does this look like rust from out gassing?

Post by GSPTOPDOG »

Does this look like rust from out gassing? ::hmm:: I had this knife in a cigar box with other knives from the 1930's and the knives ended up rusting in the same way. it seems mainly on the tops of the blades and not on the bottoms/springs of the knives as they were sitting upright. ::hmm::

The rest definitely appears to be caused by outgassing, but I don't see a lot of damage to the handles themselves that will indicate they are the ones off gassing, i.e.; handle shrinkage or discoloration. Your handle appears to me that it may be a form of plastic other than celluloid. It is difficult to tell just from the pictures without having the knife in hand, but I'm not sure that your knife handles cause that damage.

I have seen damage similar to that seen on your knife on bone handled knives that were in the near vicinity of an off-gassing celluloid knife.

Like Dale mentioned, that is outgassing but I don't think from that particular knife. Was it stored with other knives?
