I have been soaking the blade in vinegar to remove the rust and maybe tomorrow I will post a picture. The pommel cleaned up nicely but I soaked that in a small amount of vinegar, trying to keep the vinegar away from the handle. The next step is to try a little soaking in mineral oil...1967redrider wrote: ↑Sat Apr 10, 2021 7:56 pmGSP, keep us posted on your process and end result. I wouldn't be surprised if someone did put some kind of rubber coating on the leather to improve grip, and then it dry rotted. Doesn't look like dried up Cosmoline from your pictures, which might be the easiest stuff to remove without killing the leather disks. Might need to replace them.GSPTOPDOG wrote: ↑Thu Mar 25, 2021 10:17 pmThanks! I am going to try the mineral oil soaking.GSPTOPDOG wrote: ↑Thu Mar 25, 2021 10:17 pm ... It alsmost looks like someone might have painted on something similar to that liquid insulation product, or possibly liquid rubber? I've seen people put all kinds of unneeded things on leather handles. Paint, Shellac, Liquid Rubber, Silicone RTV, Electrical tape, duct tape, ect. Just take your time. You can soak it in mineral oil....

Sounds like a good plan of attack.

Found this beat up Catt 22266 Saber-ground Coke Bottle in Snow Hill MD today for $2.50 . I can make a silver shield. It'll be a nice carry. J.O'.
Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
Ridgegrass, That would have been a good find for $25. It'll make a great carry.____Dave
Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
Today my wife's best friend asked us to stop by and price her husband's knives and buckles. The husband is in a nursing home and the kids picked out what they wanted of their Dad's and the rest is going into a rummage sale. She offered me any I wanted for what I considered a fair price. I listed the ones I wanted a little higher than I figured they were worth and bought these knives and buckles. There are two Kinfolks, a Western Boulder with a Boy Scout stamp, a Buck 703 and a Western combo missing the hatchet and sheath. We used to country dance with them so she gave me the Two Step buckle.____Dave
Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
The Buck 703 looks to be quite a nice one!

Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
Thanks Dan, but to tell the truth, that's the one I'm least thrilled about getting. I love old fixed blade knives that need a little attention and a proper sheath built. The Buck just made the pile worth the $100 I gave her for the batch. She sold me the buckles for $40 so I did well and she got a little more than she would have selling them at a rummage sale.____Dave

Just typical to your usual meager findings Dave. That is a pretty fantastic bunch. You always seem to find that bird nest on the ground. Congrats. Glad you were able to help out your friends wife as well.

Thanks! I am going to try the mineral oil soaking. I have found quiet a few fixed blades with leather handles with Electrical tape on the handles and I always expect a ruined handle underneath, however part of the time some guy just thought it was a good idea to wrap a good handle in Electrical tape...

Good save GSP! That looks MUCH better. Good old knife there..
Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
Did my first real shopping trip for over a year in a larger store at Lowe's today. Had to buy a gas cap for a lawnmower I couldn't find at a smaller store.
I'd been looking at this Leatherman model since they came out, and decided to try it, since at $40 is the cheapest Leatherman my Lowes has had since the Sidekick doubled in price. It's a bit gimmicky, but pretty solid. A lot less cheap-feeling than the Crater C33T it replaced--and it has an awl. Basically, it is a Scout knife, taking out the can opener in favor of a Phillips driver.

That's a Leatherman Free...am I correct? From what I've seen, it looks like it's a pretty good multi-tool.

Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
Yep, Free T2. It's the cheapest in the new "Free" line. You'll see them on eBay occasionally for under $30 "New with no packaging".
I kinda like the T4 better, but the T2 is the only one sold locally.

They also make a pocket clip to fit. I went ahead and ordered one, as my other Leatherman tools were missing some assorted small screwdriver bits and such. What I don't get is that Leatherman is the only place selling the things. The P2 comes with the clip, but those without pliers do not.

Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
Doesn't make much sense to me, either. Pocket clips, I've noticed, are pretty popular...so why not just include one, of offer pocket clip and no pocket clip options?

Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
Big, Lucky day!
Met a framer at a car show in Willards, MD this morning. Got to talking knives and he said a nearby farmer friend of his was selling his Dad's knife collection. He called the guy and introduced us over the phone. Drove 3 miles to the farm and picked up these 8 knives. Fellow had over a hundred shell type and plastic advertisers he's going to auction in a week. Great day! Made two friends and scooped up eight nice pieces at a price we both thought fair. J.O'.
1) Remington Barlow
2) IXL Barlow, stainless bolsters, liners, and pen blade. Carbon main. Knife is untouched???
3) Camillus timber scribe
4) KA BAR/ L.L. Bean fish knife. Badly outgassed but blades are perfect. Liner lock on scaler
5) Hi-Carbon stockman by Camillus
6) ORR FELT and BLANKET Camillus 23 pattern big jack
7) Judson Cutlery, NY/Germany Barlow
Keen Kutter E.O. pattern # 2765BL

Re: KNIFE FINDS OF THE DAY
My luck continued to hold up as well this weekend.
From top to bottom:
Case Bradford 6202 Barehead Jack with . Blades hardly used
Case XX Stainless 6296X Citrus Knife. Near mint.
R & G Co. Pearl (Ripley & Gowan Jewelry mfrs.) I Believe C. N. Neel was Clive N. Neel and was an inventor.
Robeson 633728 Serpentine Stockman. Handles are black composition. Appears blades never used.
Winchester stockman with black composition handles. Handles shrinking. Blades used. (Oh well. 4 out of five ain't too bad.)
