Tuxedos
Re: Tuxedos
Nice knives mmmorici.
What are the lengths of your two knives?
Your first knife has remarkable blades.
That is a beautiful little Krusius Brothers, Lee.
That is a rather small federal shield. Very nice all around.
Jerryd has a knife on page 1 that has a shield.
Thank you for all the contributions.

Thanks Joe ... and thanks for pointing out Jerryd's knife with the shield - somehow I missed the shield ... I am sure there are others out there too...

Re: Tuxedos
Here is one by Dixon Cutlery Co.; Goins says circa 1920. 2-1/4",brass liners, half stops, and excellent snap.
Many of the MOP knives shown in the thread are quite similar in appearance. I bet most were made by a handful of Solingen cutlers.
I would think these evolved from quill knives. Maybe as the use of quills faded the cutlers gussied the pattern up and marketed them as more of a gents all-purpose knife. I bet a lot of early 20th Century pencils were sharpened by tuxedos.

Re: Tuxedos
I agree and a bunch of finger nails cleaned and trimmed and splinters removed.
Re: Tuxedos
I have a knife similar to that but I never considered calling it a tuxedo. I guess it is a tuxedo.
Mine is made by Cook Bros. Sheffield. Mine is very well made and has half stops. .... 2 1/2" closed.
A very nice knife, Dennis. Thanks for showing it.
I wonder if Thoreau used a tuxedo on one of his pencils?

The green flowered tuxedo I pictured is 2 3/4" long. The imperial is 2 7/8" long.

Re: Tuxedos
My tuxedo is almost 3 inches. Both blades stamped CATTARAUGUS CUTLERY Co. LITTLE VALLEY N.Y. Notice the long pull on the master blade and the beautiful waterfall pattern celluloid in perfect condition after 80 years.
Re: Tuxedos
Beautiful Jacknifeben and nice addition ... Celluloid pattern is quite nice and no sign of outgassing - but I am seeing some significant shrinkage at edges along bolsters ... celluloid always worries me and have no clue whether shrinkage is a precursor to eventual outgassing - I hope not ...

Jacknifeben, what a fine little knife that is. Thank you for putting it in this thread.
I have a few knives with that celluloid pattern and I always enjoy looking at them.
Thank you, Bill.

Re: Tuxedos
Thanks for the comments. Really pulled out some good ones.
Re: Tuxedos
Nice pile of Tuxedos KJ ... I am seeing a few of them that I am guessing are German in origin particularly in the first 3 photos (makers?) - but I am particularly interested in knowing who the makers are of the Tuxedos in photos 4 & 5?? Thanks...kootenay joe wrote:Here are a few more Tuxedo pattern knives.

Re: Tuxedos
Here is a tuxedo marked only "B.J. Proctor" which would lead one to think "Sheffield" but LG4 says only "Germany".
I will find the other tuxedos soon & post markings.

Re: Tuxedos
The last post on previous page shows pictures of 8 tuxedo pattern knives. Sorry for delay. Here is their ID:
Pearl from top - down: "Fillmore Cutlery Co" Germany; "Randall Hall & ??"; " 'XL'NT W. Harmant & Co"
Ivory: "Merrimac Germany"; "Pratt & Co Buffalo"; "William Rodgers Sheffield"
Tortoise: "Jones & Son" "Gernany"
Ebony: I cannot see anything, perhaps never marked.

Re: Tuxedos
Here is the one I found last week. Stamped Aussner(no info found on maker yet)it features one piece aluminum bolsters and liners with an insert of what I believe is some type of early plastic with inlays of abalone shell and a piece of silver rope.Sadly one blade is broken but for $2.95 I couldn't resist it.

Wow!... what a coincidence...knife7knut wrote:Here is the one I found last week. that looks similar to the one I convinced my girlfriend to purchase at the Lehigh Valley Knife Show this last Saturday.
After doing a little research here on AAPK... the Lakeside brand was used by Montgomery Wards between 1922−1928.
Would be nice to find out who they contracted with to make it. Perhaps the same folks as your Aussner?
