I've been using The Inhibitor shotgun plugs for about 9 years. I put them inside the enclosed display case with my knives.

For the first 5 years or so I replaced them once a year but now I buy The Inhibitor V80 oil and saturate the old plugs with it when they start to dry out. It's cheaper than replacing the plugs and it still has the VCI product in it. A soaked rag would also work but I already have the plugs so I just use those.

That's one of the knives that I sold but should have kept. It's a Northwoods Railsplitter Moose with Elephant Ivory handles. Only 4 were made in Elephant Ivory.

Here's the four SFO's that were made but these are not my knives.

Special Factory Order. These were an SFO for Big Don whom I believe used to have an AAPK store years ago when these were sold. The photo above is courtesy of his Son, Matt.

Is that your Inhibitor product in your first post?

The benefit of VCI technology (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) is that you don't apply it to your knives or tools. It emits a vapor that blocks the chemical reaction that causes corrosion.

As long as it's the only product you use to prevent corrosion, your knives stay clean and dry. No oily mess.

That being said, I also use a variety of topical products that I apply directly to my carbon steel knives in addition to The Inhibitor plug. The combination of the two gives me peace of mind that I'm doing everything I can to protect my knives. If one doesn't work, the other one will.

Hey, if you think 3-in-One oil works good, put a little dab of Ballistol on next hog show. You’ll have to beat em off of ya.

I had a boyfriend back in the day, who used actual bearing grease in his hair.

Hey, dumb question, but would rust inhibitors work to help protect blades if you get a knife gassing out? Say you have a knife in a case you don’t check all that often. If the scales started to go, would the rust inhibitors help the blade or is it a different type of corrosion?

Wow! I think I’m just pretty speechless. After looking at the calendar, I think I’d lay off the Hoppes. ::teary_eyes::
