Red Trout Knife Co

Post by Schradenut »

The mail arrived yesterday and in it was a knife i have been long awaiting....my Red Trout Sambar Stag Jack knife.
It is the most beautifully made knife, being made by Eric Albers, late of Schrade and Canal Street Cutlery and now working for CSC Co Co-Op.
Rich only has about 50 knives made at the moment with many different scale materials available.
My knife is a Jack with beautiful Sambar Stag scales on it. Absolutely superbly made which is what we come to expect from Eric.
Richard Lanigan has always traded under the banner of "Red Trout", so it was only fitting that he continue with this name.
Rich is close friends with an Artist by the name of Scott Balfe of Earlton NY who specialised in Landscape Paintings of the Hudson Valley. He did an amazing job for Rich, which he has used on the box detail sticker. I am extremely excited to own this delightful knife, which is perfectly made in all departments. He even put his phone number on the box. Many thanks for a fine piece of cutlery Rich.
Tony.

I was eyeing those knives in the for sale scroll. They look pretty nice, and we know if they come from Eric, they will be well-built!

Great stuff and a beauty of a knife!

Beautiful knife, resembles "Eric's Jack" from a few years ago.
Did Rich L. commission Eric to make these knives ?
I follow Red Trout on ebay but i have not seen him post any of these knives. How might one get a Red Trout knife ? I really doubt Rich wants to get a lot of phone calls.

Roland, yes it's very close to the same pattern, 154CM steel for these blades though. The knives are through Canal Street CoOp, so it's the same knife as the current CS boy's knife. Mr L. approached me last year to see about doing a Red Hill knife for him, and I thought it was a great idea. He's been a great friend and passionate collector for many years, and it seemed only fitting that he should finally have a knife with his company's name on it. Wally left it all up to me so I did a bunch of consulting with Mr L. and did a lot of hammering and grinding and this is the result. It was a limited run of fifty knives with varying amounts of handle materials. Don't know what he's got left since they seem to be selling pretty quickly, but here's a list of what went out the shop door:

Teal Green G10 - 7 knives

Brown Linen Micarta - 3 knives

Curly Maple - 5 knives

Abalone - 3 knives

Pau Abalone (blue) - 4 knives

Leopard Wood - 2 knives

Sambar Stag - 2 knives

Blue and Yellow Kirinite - 3 knives

Grey and Red Kirinite - 2 knives

Green Jigged Bone - 5 knives

Blue Rope Jigged Bone - 8 knives

Desert Ironwood - 3 knives

Gabon Ebony - 3 knives

Tony I'm glad you're happy with it, hearing compliments like that makes all the work worthwhile! I have to say I'm a little embarrassed though, it looks like I forgot to take my toothbrush to the buffing compound around your spun pins when I washed the knife, doh! ::dang::
A wooden toothpick or something similar should pop that right out since it'll be quite dry by now. Sorry about that!

After reading the OP I bought one of these this morning. I’m glad you explained all this, I had no idea about the background, or who made them etc.
Very much appreciate information like this. Thank you!

Eric, many thanks for the extra info on the Red Trout knives, specially scale materials/numbers, which i didn't know.
It wasn't until i listed this knife that i noticed the crud on the pin...gone.
Knowing your workload i am amazed that you find time to do any extra knives for anyone. You get my vote mate.

Dale that's a great choice! That's the same bone that was used on Schrade's 100th Ann. cigar box set, as well as on a couple of Canal Street knives. Schrade had barely started on those anniversary knives when they suddenly closed down, so there was a mess of that bone left over at the factory. Dave Swinden snagged a bunch of it during one of his clandestine forays into the closed factory. It was used on a few limited edition CS knives, I think the moonpie, half moonpie and the swell center jack. After Canal Street closed I grabbed some boxes of it that were on their way to the dumpster. Thank goodness I spotted them! Gotta keep the line going, it's what knife lore is all about! It'd be cool to have knives from each generation so to speak.

Eric, thank you for posting that. That is the same one that I bought. I have one of those Schrades and I bought this one because I thought it looked the same. Very interesting information. Makes this knife even more special.

Thanks for the information Eric, I thought that was probably some of that blue rope bone from the 100th Anniversary set. I've always admired it but I've never had a knife with that bone. It's kind of like the bone that would not die being rescued from the Schrade factory and then from Canal Street. It looks like the third time is the charm for it!

I can't wait for it to get here. ::super_happy::

Eric and Mr. Redtrout did a damn good job on these. Both these guys are tremendous people and have been very good to me. I would buy more of these, but I think these need to be spread out for all to enjoy.

Cheers,
Corey

Dale and Eric, got my blue rope jigged today. I dug out the Schrade knife that I have that has the same bone handle. Side by side you can see that they came from the same place. Does anyone know if this was part of that anniversary set Schrade made? I bought this Schrade off the Chris Kirk knife show shortly after Schrade closed. I can’t remember the details and it came with no box. He had a lot of these to sell at that time, wish I had bought several.
Oh, and I love the knife, great job on these.

Mark, yes that's one of the anniversary knives. The only thing missing is the shield and blade etch, which was the point a majority of them didn't reach. That's a great example. Glad you like the knife! ::tu::
