Camillus Conundrum

Post by MT-Vessel »

Seeking info about a Camillus serpentine stockman (clip, sheepfoot & spey) currently for sale. It is a jigged delrin stockman with no tang stamp on the master’s mark side. The pile side has R8. The only other identifier is an oval shield with CAMILLUS between two lines.
I thank you in advance for any and all info.

JV the only Camillus knives I know of with the R8 stamp are the Remington repros. The Remington R8 knife had that stamp on the pile side, and Remington stamps on the mark side blades. They also had the round Remington shield. Sounds like your knife had a rejected unstamped Remington blade used for the master blade. Probably put together from parts as a second or lunchbox knife.

To tack on to what Eric said, Camillus made a lot of Remington knives and towards the end, used over stock blades from contract knives and SFO's to make some Camillus knives.

I'm assuming this is what the knife looks like except for the stamping & the shield. (or lack there of) This is one of Vit's pictures.

There ya go. Easy to see the Remington tang stamp has been ground off.

I see what you mean about the Remington stamp being ground off. Good eye.

Are those lines on the tang that are perpendicular to the long pull grind marks?

Many of the knives that Camillus put out the last few years they were open, I believe were made from left over parts. Tom Williams told me the knives Camillus made with the tang stamps that were attached as opposed to stamped were made from blades that were left over from the production of other knives that were SFO’s for other companies such as Remington.
Initially I thought the knife in the OP was rushed through production without receiving the Camillus etch on the tang. Eric suggested that it might have been made with extra parts. After looking at the knife on the completed eBay auction, and seeing how poorly the shield was inlaid, I think Eric may be correct. This may just be someone Frankenknife made from a Remington second and a Camillus. ::shrug::
