Tang Stamp Question Purina Pocket Knife

Post by TPK »

Hi everybody,

I just bought a Purina Pocket Knife off the Bay and I have a question about the Stamps? One says UTICA STAINLESS and the other says Japan 32148. So if UTICA is a company in or from NY, why is the JAPAN 32148 on there? Maybe somebody can shed some light on that for me. Thank you for your time! ::handshake::

Utica/Kutmaster has had quite a few imported lines. I presume this was an early one.

Is the knife presumed early because of the match strike blade nick?
Stainless steel blade with match strike.
Seems odd to me....

A promotional item I assume?
How many pounds of dog food did you need to buy to get one?
Or was it a surprise inside the dog food box "like Cracker Jacks"?
::hmm::

Ralston Purina made lot's of farm feed esp, for chickens. Ever hear of "vertical integration." More likely a give away to a farmer for a large feed order? also not unusual to have blades made in Japan, not sure if shipped to the states then completed here. Would save on Tariffs.

Thanks for the info everyone. I now have some idea why the blade may be stamped with Japan. I also learned what a match strike is. That was new to me so I did some research on that. As to how & why this particular type of knife became my grandfather's EDC, well, he was a farmer to start off with, he also breed and sold Beagles and he also worked at a "Souther States" feed & seed store so I imagine he had more than 1 chance to get his hands on a Purina pocket knife. Ever sence my mom said that he always carried one, I've been wanting to have one. Now I do. ::super_happy:: If anyone knows anything else interesting about Purina knives I'd love to hear it. Thanks again!

Thanks LDF-Knives. If you ever think of selling or trading yours, let me know. I'd be interested in it. ::handshake:: Do you own any of the other Purina Knives? Have any you'd part with? ::shrug::
