I have tried the Hot Water Maceration and the Cold Water Maceration, the results have not been great, however I did not add any chemicals to the water. Hydrogen Peroxide might just be the trick!Papa Bones wrote: ↑Thu Nov 19, 2020 9:00 pmI have known a few people who have used hydrogen peroxide to whiten a deer skull with good success. It should work on any bone.GSPTOPDOG wrote: ↑Thu Nov 19, 2020 7:53 pm Using my rope knife to clean up a horse skull I hope to make presentable and display as "yard-art". I boiled the skull for 20 minutes in a big 'ol pot of water. That seemed to help a lot, but it still needs a lot of cleaning. I have heard of leaving bones on an anthill and other techniques to get rid of the flesh and cartilage. Any tips out there on "the best way" to clean up one of these suckers?

I misused the tip of my SOG Flash II to remove a dinged up tiny Phillips head screw in a snowman decoration.

I used my knife for one of the very best jobs: to open a package containing a new knife! (An old Kutmaster camp knife from an eBay auction)

Desmobob, don't let that bother you, my friend! That SOG is a gasket scrapper supreme, that's why it rides in the breast pocket of my bibs. Having a "sacrificial" knife is necessary for the good of others, I guess...treefarmer wrote: ↑Wed Dec 09, 2020 7:05 pm Desmobob, don't let that bother you, my friend! Re: WHAT DID YOU USE YOUR KNIFE FOR TODAY!!!!!!????
Fedex just dropped this off. I preordered it back when Mattel first announced these (you could only get them if you preordered it--if I recall most of the $15 this cost went to charity right then and there) back in April. I had figured the "Dec. 31" date they gave was just filler, and figured it would probably end up being summer or fall. Well, I was wrong. It shipped finally, on Friday, and showed up today.
Used the (factory second; but perfectly fine to me) Native 5 to cut the plastic bag the Fedex driver used to attach the package to the fence, and to open the box and package. The box, unlike 5 and 9 packs actually has a traditional flap, and not glue, so I won't have a problem using it to store the set.

Cool pic, great whittling project. What kind of wood do you use or what works best? Seems like a job for Hickory or Oak, maybe maple but can't tell what wood that is.TripleF wrote: ↑Wed Dec 09, 2020 1:53 amOld Hunter wrote: ↑Sat Dec 05, 2020 5:59 pm Caught it, cleaned it, grilled it, ate it - I love Specks! I agree, the grain in that one is beautiful. And you didn't do a bad job exposing the grain as well. Lovely.TripleF wrote: ↑Tue Dec 15, 2020 10:02 amSycamore. It has the coolest grain when sanded down...
Re: WHAT DID YOU USE YOUR KNIFE FOR TODAY!!!!!!????
Thanks. Appreciate the tip because I do some stuff like spoons and whistles and that grain is great. Gotta get me some and try it, never worked Sycamore. How hard is it, softer like pine and fir, or harder like maple and oak? Thanks again and that is beautiful. Couldn't see the grain like that when it was rough. Wow what a finisher.TripleF wrote: ↑Tue Dec 15, 2020 10:02 amSycamore. It has the coolest grain when sanded down...
