How in the world do they know what they're talking about when they have three different patterns, all using the same pattern number? ::facepalm::
They are not all the same pattern number. For Case knives, the second number is the key - it is for the number of blades on the knife:
X1YZ - 1 blade
X2YZ - 2 blades
X3YZ - 3 blades

First digit is handle material, second digit number of blades, remaining digits indicate the frame shape.

Another 3-3/8" Case, the 6216-1/2 - same frame as the Case Barlow's - a bit heavy for me in the 'sweet spot" length. OH

No bottom bolster turns me off.

Colonel, thank you for your enthusiastic participation. And thanks to anyone else who posts here.

I see that once again, I didn't make myself clear. ::facepalm:: I was actually referring to blade placement in the 87's. You have an 87 with 2 blades, one at each end. Then you have an 87 with two blades, both at the same end. And last (and least in my estimation - please don't be offended Stockman affectionados) you have an 87 with Stockman blades and placement. Whaaaa???

Regarding the "Texas" designation for some stockman patterns and similar jack patterns, my understanding is that the designation goes way back and refers to the squared bolster design, not the size of the knife.

Somewhere in some old knife catalog (from the pre WWII era) I recall seeing a square bolstered stock knife referred to as a "Stockman's Knife, Texas Pattern".

Thanks Steve for the education on Texas Jacks and why they have that name. Always something new to learn about pocketknives! OH

I find the 3" Case 25 1/2 Mini Coke-bottle pattern fits my sweet spot too because it is a bit wider/thicker, thus heavier, than the typical 3" - 3 1/4" penknives. I have two of the mini Coke-bottles that get some occasional pocket time. The green bone was my EDC for about five years back in the mid-late 2000's (before I began rotating pocketknives). OH

This Japanese Monarch Jack is a slick little outfit that fights way above it's weight class as do all the Medium Jacks (IMO).

So don't let it stop you from keeping one or two bock (or three but that's getting into dangerous territory). Like'n leads to collecting.

And speaking of liking and collecting, that brings up today's mid-sized jack.

Joe, that's what I did with one of mine and quite frankly, it actually looks better to me than when it had the wrap.
This shot is before I got all the wrap off.
