Name that Jigging
Garry Moore suggested a thread for all the different bone jigging that is out there. This thread could be one that grows over time and might serve as a great reference
First up is a Schatt and Morgan Peanut with Crimson red jigged bone handles. I have no idea what this pattern of jigging is called so I am calling it Rock Bass Jigging. The pattern looks like the scales on a Rock Bass.
The second picture has amber bone stag and Lapis blue Aberdeen jigged bone handles on these Moki’s
Next is a TC Barlow with Black Cherry Saw Cut bone jigged.
Next a Ka-Bar made by Queen with Honey Comb jigged bone.
Last is a Henckels by Boker with red Pin Feather Jigged bone.
Feel free to add any you want to this thread and don’t be afraid to correct any mistakes in “Name that Jigging”.

Mark are these all names that the manufacturer gave for the type of jigged bone ?
Or, are you making some of them up ?

Re: Name that Jigging
I’m putting the names on them that I have seen. The Rock Bass jigged bone is completely made up by me. I can’t find one like it to figure out what it is.
So many of these are listed for sale as “pick bone”, which is a an enormously broad catch all.
Case has a lot of jigging patterns that they have named, when I get a chance to pull some of them out, I will use the name they give them.
Feel free to correct any mistakes. I’d like this to be as accurate as possible.
I do try to call jigged bone what I think it looks like if I can’t find the name. Not sure there are official names to very many jigging patterns. I can think of about half a dozen that stand out as distinct and have a name.
It would be great to have Eric or someone from Culpeppers chime in.

Re: Name that Jigging
Unfortunately “ebay ignorance” has pretty much destroyed many old bone jigging pattern names, and none more flagrant than “pick bone” which has become a catch-all description for most any kind of jigging.
Here’s some examples of what I consider to be pick bone. I think real pick bone was hand jigged, whereas the Ulster below was done by machine.

Re: Name that Jigging
Derek, I am not sure if it is cut to look that way or jigged. I included it because it isn’t smooth bone.
Thanks Guys for all the examples of the old bone jigging. I don’t collect many of the older knives so it’s great to have you guys throw those in. This is going to be a thread that I know I will enjoy looking at over and over, I hope others do as well.

Re: Name that Jigging
It’s actually saw cut. It’s all saw cut before jigging, but saw cut is just left with saw marks on it and not jigged. Sometimes the saw blade’s marks are mostly or completely hafted away during finishing, so the end result looks smooth.
Click to enlarge these - you can see some of the saw marks remaining on some, but on others they’ve been hafted away,

Re: Name that Jigging
Here is one that the manufacturer has marked as “pick bone”. The H&R code on this is RPB for red pick bone.

Re: Name that Jigging
I agree David, but it goes to show how broad the category of “pick bone” is. It’s surprising to see a manufacture default to that definition for this jigging.

Re: Name that Jigging
Here are some more. I have no idea what to call the top three. The Schatt and Morgan reminds me of a boiling pot of oil. The Cattaraugus looks like some kind of animal. The Henckels, I would love to know what this jigging is called. It’s very evenly distributed right up to the bolsters.
The Case Classic says on the COA that this is banana bone. And the Marbles is a herringbone pattern. Looks just like my dress shirts I wore to work everyday.

The Cattaraugus knife shown earlier with worm groove bone, and this one, had jigging also known as 'Indian Trails' by some collectors, and my understanding was furnished to them by Rogers Bone Company. Rogers Bone apparently made other patterns than what we usually think of as 'Rogers Bone.' Correct me if I am wrong.

Interesting, I haven’t heard that called Indian Trails, but I can see why they would call it that. Does the “Rogers Bone” refer to the jigging pattern minus the grooves or did Rogers make other jigging that qualifies?tongueriver wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 8:16 pm The Cattaraugus knife shown earlier with worm groove bone, and this one, had jigging also known as 'Indian Trails' by some collectors, and my understanding was furnished to them by Rogers Bone Company. Mark, here’s an entire thread about Rogers bone. Scroll down a ways on the first page to find a post from JerryD with a quote from an article in Knife World (now Knife Magazine) explaining the full story of Rogers bone, including “Indian Trail” bone.
