Two Of My Favorites......
Two Of My Favorites......
Heres two of my favorite knives, they aren't the rarest or most valuable but they are some of the most important to me.......
I like that Hawbaker set too. I can't remember ever seeing one of those sets.

I know they sold well in Pa. the home state of hawbakers trapping supplies. Stan Hawbaker the owner had a camp in northern Maine in Island Falls. My Dad used to watch over his camp during the off times when it sat empty. Stan was a buddy of my Dads so he would bring him new knives they had made for advertising and promotion. I have several of the traps separate cause he knew my Dad was taken by them (they also work). I have a queen promotional improved muskrat skinner and two case knives one red bone and one green. My pride and joy is the boxed set pictured with Hawbakers picture and birth and death dates along with the case knife and trap. It was issued in 1988 the 50th anniversary of Hawbakers. Stan died in a logging mishap in the fall of 1983. The trap has a small copper tag with the set number on it as well as the knife. 1000 sets were made and distributed, as far as I know.

Thanks for all the extra history.
One time I was camping in Minnesota and over heard 2 mosquitoes talking (as they were busing in my ear as you know they do that).
One said should we eat him here or take him home with use and eat him later..
I think that's when some one came up with the idea of trapping the little buggers..

Down in the bottomlands, in S. Arkansas we've got skeeters that can stand flat-footed and rape a turkey.
My cuzzin from Mississippi uses them as targets, with his .22 ... It usually takes a head shot, to kill 'em outright.
Very nice story, about Mr. Hawbaker ! I never owned one of HIS knives, but I've always liked the pattern. Right now, my only copy is a Captain's Rooster - I'll get a pic, asap.

Re: Two Of My Favorites......
Correction of my first post. I carelessly miss spelled the name on my knife. It is indeed a Hawbaker not Hawbacker. My apologies for causing the confusion. Is it unusual that the Hawbaker blade is a two dot and the Muskrat blade is a three dot.
I’m enjoying learning about the Case forum but still struggling with navigating all the many different “threads” that are available. But having fun! Thanks!

Re: Two Of My Favorites......
Wow, you really dug up an old thread!
That description sounds like what collectors call a “transition” knife. One blade from one year and one from the next year - happens every year on some knives as the year changes and Case uses up last year's blade inventory. They usually don’t make a lot of them that way but there are some. It’s nothing unique to any particular pattern but only happens on knives that have more than one “master” blade (those are the only blades that have a date code stamped on them). The Congress pattern is another like that.
