Classic Knife Ad

Post by tvic »

Thought this one from 1920 was classic - boys drooling over their favorite pocket knife.

Great ad ! "Corner Hardware Store". They are rare now, which is a loss.
I was in France in early 1990's and every town had at least one cutlery store. They just sold knives, no other 'stuff' and each was privately owned, not part of a 'chain'. I was like the boys in this ad, looking at all the knives in glass display counters.
If you ever go to France make sure you check out a few of the dedicated cutlery stores

I don't know all the details my brother in law has been to one, but once a year they have a massive knife fair, hundreds of tables of merchants selling their knives. He said it is a knife persons nirvana.

Thanks for sharing … somehow, thumbwheeling through an online webpage just isn’t the same is it ::shrug:: … no sounds, smells or nearby sights … and certainly no soul.

There is an independently owned hardware store not too far from me, but they have a poor knife selection (based on what I've seen). Thanks for sharing this great old ad!

The old Sears or Wards catalog had lumberjack leather boots with a leather pouch sewed on the side with a pocket knife in it. I dreamed about getting those boots.

Nice ad. I remember my dad and I would go downtown to the hardware store once and a while.
They had old wooden floors that creaked when you walked over them. They had a nice
tool selection. It had a smell of combined wood, metal shavings and oil. The big box hardware stores are so sterile.

Wonderful old ad! Thankfully there are a few of the old stores left here with knives. Me snd the boys do just like in that ad, look and drool when we go in there. lol

Thanks!

1939 ad - wouldn’t it be cool for a boy to get a knife by collecting cereal box tops today!

Nice. Would that be an Imperial knife, maybe?
Meanwhile, I have not seen it for awhile but Ralston hot cereal was very nice high quality breakfast fixin's.
I don't know what I have in my 1945 to 1980s collection of American Rifleman magazines but there are probably some interesting old knife ads. Those magazines are available for sale by the way if anyone is interested.

How about getting a knife from collecting bubble gum wrappers?

E.! Don'tcha remember those blistering hot summer days when you were a kid and you'd get up, pull on jeans and a T-shirt and nothin' else, head out for the day, and when you finally got home the soles of your feet were filthy and like leather? 8)
