Fixed or folding
Fixed or folding
Folding for EDC and fixed for outdoors adventure ( hunting, camping, fishing). Any thoughts?

Re: Fixed or folding
Bladesman,
I'll have to confess, I use folding for both EDC and outdoor adventure. The EDC is usually a trapper or stockman and during my outdoor activity here in the Florida Panhandle, my old Queen #39 will do all that I need to do with a knife. I guess when I was a kid, we all wanted a fixed blade on our belt but for many, many years those big ol' folding hunters have fit my right front pocket very well. My first folding hunter was a Christmas gift from my wife back in 1966, a Case C61050SAB. It has been back to the Case factory one time for repair.
On the other hand, I have field dressed a number of deer with just an EDC, trapper or stockman.

Re: Fixed or folding
I don't take to the woods much, I'm afraid of ticks, but if I were to wander there I think all I would need around here is this Remington folder on my belt.
Seldom used, always glad to pack it. Locks up with one hand access. 5" closed.

Re: Fixed or folding
I would say Buck 110 for EDC, and Buck 119 for outdoor adventures.

I only use a fixed blade for outdoor sports and a folder for EDC,with a modern one hand folder clipped in the pocket.

Here is another Buck option. 124 & 110
Originally I was thinking of a survival kit in the 110 sheath. Then I realized the obvious answer is a 110.

There’s always a 110 in my back pocket, though I usually also have a smaller multi blade folder in my hip pocket.
Can’t beat a 119 for trips to the mountains or desert.

Re: Fixed or folding
I always double down - at least 2 folders and 2 fixed blades, minimum. The old saw of "Two is one and one is none." applies.
Buck 110 or Kabar 1189 for a large folder and a Buck 510 for the small folder, usually. Paranoia may require a third knife.
Kabar shorty for one of the fixed blades, Becker BK7 or BK9 for the other fixed blade.
More might be included if the trip is a "truck camping" trip, where extra stuff can be carted in for camp use.

Re: Fixed or folding
I am always going to be carrying a pocket knife, so that is a given. So the question becomes do I need to add a fixed blade for heavier or prolonged outdoor activities. (my camping days are over; if you find me in the deep woods, it will because I wondered off from the "home") If I were to go out in the wild on a walkabout, I would carry a fixed-blade. It would be a Cattaraugus 225Q; I don't think that they have been improved upon for hard work.

When outdoors, I like to tote a little something for any occasion.
Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!

Re: Fixed or folding
Last deer season I didn’t use a fixed blade at all. I used a Buck 722 spitfire for field dressing, and it was the best I’d ever used for that task. For taking the britches off Bambi I used a CASE two blade folding hunter. Again, it was fantastic. Before last season I’d used an old well worn Western bird and trout knife.
This year, if I’m blessed to get one I’ll use one of these two ESSEE knives that I just picked up.

Yes sir! We just got back from the mountains and made our pilgrimage to SMKW. The 3 was an early Christmas present and the Izula 2, well I couldn’t help myself.
